Laboratory Exercise XVIII

Gas Stoichiometry Lab

Procedure:

Name__________________________

1. Cut a piece of Magnesium to approximately 3 cm in length. Re-measure the Magnesium and record the exact length in the data table. 2. Roll the Magnesium into a tight coil that ill fit into the eudiometer and tie a string onto it. 3. !se a small bea"er to add approximately 1# $ 1% ml of & M 'Cl to the eudiometer. (. )ilt the eudiometer and slo ly add tap ater being careful to layer it on top of the acid %. *o er the Magnesium into the eudiometer to a depth of about 1# cm. &. Co+er the eudiometer ith a one hole stopper trapping the string ith the stopper. ,. Co+er the stopper hole ith your finger and in+ert the eudiometer into a large cylinder filled ith ater. -. .ait until all the Magnesium has reacted and sha"e the tube to loosen any gas bubbles. /. 0d1ust the le+el of the ater in the eudiometer to the le+el in the cylinder and read the +olume of the gas. 1#. Record the )emperature of the ater and the 2arometric 3ressure in the room.
