heard i n al l the ni ne tel ephones (i t i s
al so possi bl e that the phones wi l l not
wor k due to hi gher l oad), and out of
ni ne persons ei ght wi l l fi nd that the cal l
i s not for them. Further, one can over-
hear others conversati on, whi ch i s not
desi rabl e. To overcome these probl ems,
the ci rcui t gi ven here proves benefi ci al ,
as the ri ng i s heard onl y i n the desi red
extensi on, say, extensi on number 1.
For maki ng use of thi s faci l i ty, the
cal l i ng subscri ber i s requi red to i ni ti al l y
di al the nor mal phone number of the
cal l ed subscri ber. When the cal l i s estab-
l i shed, no ri ng-back tone i s heard by the
cal l i ng party. The cal l i ng subscri ber has
then to press the asteri k (*) button on
the tel ephone to acti vate the tone mode
(i f the phone normal l y works i n di al mode)
and di al extensi on number, say, 1, wi thi n
10 seconds. (I n case the cal l i ng subscri ber
fai l s to di al the requi red extensi on num-
ber wi thi n 10 seconds, the l i ne wi l l be
di sconnected automati cal l y.) Al so, i f the
di al ed extensi on phone i s not l i fted wi thi n
10 seconds, the ri ng-back tone wi l l cease.
The ri ng si gnal on the mai n phone
l i ne i s detected by opto-coupl er MCT-
2E (I C1), whi ch i n tur n acti vates the
10-second on ti mer , for med by I C2
(555), and energi ses rel ay RL10 (6V, 100-
ohm, 2 C/O). One of the N/O
contacts of the rel ay has been
used to connect +6V rai l to the
pr ocessi ng ci r cui tr y and the
other has been used to provi de
220-ohm l oop resi stance to de-
ener gi se the r i nger r el ay i n
tel ephone exchange, to cut off
the ri ng.
When the cal l er di al s the
extensi on number (say, 1) i n
ton e mode, ton e r ecei v er
CM8870 (I C3) outputs code
0001, whi ch i s fed to the 4-
bi t BCD-to-10 l i ne deci mal de-
coder I C4 (CD4028). The out-
put of I C4 at i ts output pi n
14 (Q1) goes h i gh an d
swi tches on the SCR (TH-1)
and associ ated rel ay RL1. Re-
l ay RL1, i n turn, connects, vi a
i ts N/O contacts, the 50Hz ex-
tensi on r i ng si gnal , der i ved
from the 230V AC mai ns, to
the l i ne of tel ephone 1. Thi s
ri ng si gnal i s avai l abl e to tel e-
phone 1 onl y, because hal f
of the si gnal i s bl ocked by di -
ode D1 and DI AC1 (whi ch do
not conduct bel ow 35 vol ts).
As soon as phone 1 i s

si stor) i ncreases and operates
opto-coupl er I C5 (MCT-2E).
