Japan: Government System 2014

Background:
From ancient Japan, to present day Japan, there have been many changes and new systems implemented. Japan still has an emperor, presently Akihito, but unlike ancient times the emperor holds very little political power and is mainly just the ceremonial monarch and the head of the Japanese Imperial Family. The current Japanese constitution was promulgated in the year 1946 during the occupation by the Allied powers.

Legislature:
The Japanese legislature is called the Diet and is made up of the House of Representatives (480 members), and the House of Councilors (242 members). The members of the Diet are elected by the Japanese people. The Diet has sole power to make laws.

Judiciary:
The highest court is the Supreme Court. Other courts are district courts, high courts, family courts, and summary courts. Judges are appointed by the cabinet.

Cabinet:
The head of the cabinet is the Prime Minster and consists of up to 17 ministers of state. The cabinet is the executive power in Japans political structure. The current ruler is Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The party currently holding the power is the Liberal Democratic Party, other parties include: -Democratic Party of Japan -Japan Restoration Party -Your Party -Japanese Communist Party -Social Democratic Party
