Cynthia Raisor, PetroChem Director of HR John Clyde, PetroChem Recruiter February 6, 2014 Memo Report on Hayden Long

Executive Summary I have completed the background check of Hayden Long, a potential Process Engineer intern, you requested of me. My search included a check of his resume, acclaimed references, and social media activity, and I will organize my findings by each source used and state the key assumptions under each paragraph for accessibility. Hayden is young and motivated, but lacks experience in his field. However, using my sources on Hayden available to me, I believe he has integrity and the determination to excel here at PetroChem. Overall, I would recommend flying him out to give him an interview slot. Resume Review Hayden Longs resume was detailed and well-organized, but it was lacking in experience. He has experience in Matlab and currently maintains a GPA of 3.9 at Texas A&M, which has a very competitive chemical engineering program, but he is only a sophomore. Although his GPA seems promising, the experience gained in upper-level engineering courses, in my opinion, is more important than a few good marks in the lower-level courses. Also, his work experience is limited to jobs outside of chemical processes. He has worked for e3 Solutions and Envy Publications as an intern, but neither of them dealt with mathematics or engineering of any kind. However, he is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and is in the process of joining Omega Chi Epsilon (OXE), the honors fraternity of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M. Hayden was also a member of the Meals on Wheels Volunteer Team, which delivered meals to the elderly and disabled. The groups he associates himself with display integrity and ambition, both being key points in the PetroChem. However, there are better options in terms of qualifications, credentials, and expertise. Key Assumption(s) - Studious - Inexperienced in the industry - Ambitious and has integrity References Hayden listed multiple references, all of which supported him. They emphasized his leadership and hard-working qualities specifically. The references he listed, along with their main points, are below: Benjamin Wright, his high school football coach I spoke with Mr. Wright personally, and he heavily endorsed Hayden for the job. Although he was unable to provide me with any information surrounding Haydens experience in the work force, Wright, who has known Hayden since he was seven years old, emphasized Haydens leadership skills and dedication in sports. Even though it is not a professional leadership role, the quality to lead should translate to the work force. Jim Holste, his sophomore chemical engineering professor at Texas A&M Jim instructed Hayden in the Fall 2013 semester in mass and energy balance, an integral skill to succeed at PetroChem. Jim endorsed and assured me of Haydens mastery in the subject. He was unable to give me personal qualities of Hayden, but he made clear that Haydens work ethic was noteworthy and unquestionable.

Doug Williams, his high school superintendent Doug was able to give me a more personal side of Hayden than the other two references. Apparently, Doug acted as a father figure to Hayden when his parents were going through a tough divorce. Even though it was a tender topic, Doug was able to explain to me that Hayden stayed strong and maintained a normal lifestyle through adversity. This showed me that Hayden does not let his situation get in the way of his productivity, a very positive quality to possess.

I also looked through the reference letters Hayden sent in as well. They were written by Benjamin Wright and Doug Williams, and similar points were stated in the letters as to the points brought up in the phone conversations with them. However, if you wish to see the reference letters, they are attached to this memo (Attachment 2). Key Assumption(s) - Leader - Hard-working - Works and strives through adversity Social Media Activity I was able to find Haydens online profiles on LinkedIn and Twitter, which gave me a little more insight into his professional career, but not personal life. His Twitter is relatively new and has very little substance, but his LinkedIn account is very well developed. All of his professional experience and academic achievements are posted on his profile. He is also a part of multiple groups associated with oil and gas, including our company page. The amount of time and effort he put into developing a professional profile indicate that he enjoys the chemical industry and wishes to progress. However, I am a little unsettled by his lack of personal social media. He is not on Facebook, which could mean that he is worried about potential employers finding something negative, but that is a worst case scenario. His lack of personal presence online could also mean that he does not waste his time and is very productive. As a whole, his online presence stands out as a positive sign and his lack of personal presence should be taken with a grain of salt. Key Assumption(s) - Enjoys the industry - Lacks personal information Conclusion and Recommendation Overall, Hayden Long seems like an outstanding worker, and he has great potential to excel in our company. He is somewhat of a risk because of his inexperience, but I believe with careful instruction and the correct mentor, he can be beneficial. I would recommend you to contact Hayden and to fly him in for an interview in order to discover the more intricate details about him. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, or you can also contact Hayden. I will attach his information below (Attachment 2). Also, I think it would be best if we go over his credentials together. I can meet in you in your office at a time that is convenient to you.
