Music Composition 2012 Instrumental Techniques Assignment


Using various instrumental techniques can be a useful way of enhancing the effectiveness of your music. Assignment 1. Make a list of the various techniques commonly used on a range of different instruments (not just ones you play). Provide a written description of these techniques, their musical effect and why you think you might use these effects in a composition. See examples below.

Orchestral Strings Technique Double Stopping

Description & Musical Effect Playing two notes at the same time. Creates a thicker texture, adds harmonic clarity.

Bass Guitar Technique Popping

Description & Musical Effect Pulling the string and releasing it so that it drops on the fret board and pops. Traditionally associated with Funk style. Adds a percussive nature, accenting/dynamic interest.
