Overview of the muscle tissues

Muscle Function: Producing movement Maintaining posture Stabilizing joints Generating heat

Arrangement of Fascicles
Parallel shape : arrange to the long axis of the muscles. Straplike such as sartorius and fusiform such as bisep brachii Pennate shape: the facicles are short and they attach oblique (Penna = feather) Fan shape (convergent): has a broad origin and its fascicles converge a single tendon such as pec major. Circular shape: when the fasicles arranged in concentric rings.

Arrangement of Fascicles The arrangement of the muscles fascicles determines its range of motion and power. Skeletal muscles fibers shorten to about 70% of their resting length. The longer and the more nearly parallel fascicle provide the greatest degree of shortening

Arrangement of Fascicles
Muscles power depend more on the total number of the muscle cells in the muscle. The greater the number the greater the power The stocky bipennate and multipennate muscles, which the pack in the most fibers, shorten very little but are very powerful

Isotonic and isometric contractions
Muscles do not always shorten during contraction. The term contraction refers to the active process of generating force. To move a load, muscle tension must be greater .

Isotonic and isometric contractions
There are two main categories of contractions: 1. Isotonic the muscle changes in length and move the load Isotonic contractions come in two flavors: Concentric muscle shorten and does work Eccentric muscle contract as its lengthens 2. Isometric contraction tensions continues to increase but the muscle neither shortens nor lengthens.
