Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 2: BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and involve all families in their childrens development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence:

Collaboratively I worked with a small group of peers to create a family scenario project. This project was done over a series f weeks. Each person in the group was assigned a family member to write about. We were given scenarios each week in which we had to describe how our assigned family member was dealing with the situation. At the end of the project we put it together as a PowerPoint to get the feeling of how the family dealt with the situations they were handed.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this family scenario project, I learned that all families are different, and they all deal with different situations. This really taught me how important it is to build relationships with the families of the children in my care. Many times families may not have any type of support needed during a critical time in their life. It is important as a teacher to be a supporter of the family and empower the families when needed.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This project has made me more aware of the different types of families I may be serving. After working together to complete this project, I feel that it is very important to build a relationship with my families. I want my families to feel comfortable with me, and I want to support and empower families in any way I can.
