Ratios

Math

Grade: 6

Goals: Students will be able to understand and explain a ratio as a relationship between 2 quantities and represent this relationship through examples. ommon ore Standard Math !" #nderstand the concept o$ a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for ever 2 wings there was 1 beak!" For ever vote candidate # received, candidate $ received nearl three votes!" 6 Grade !S% 6.&.$ollow precisel' a multistep procedure when carr'ing out experiments( ta)ing measurements( or per$orming technical tas)s. 6.*. Opening/Framing the Lesson/Introduction/Early Assessment

Monitor/Feed ac!

0egin the lesson showing a short ,ideo that explains how ratios can be applied to our dail' li,es. 6$terward( de$ine the terms !atios and equi, alent !atios $or the students. %hen use the example music and beats to help the students understand the concept. #sing the garage band app on an 3"ad model ratios $or the students b' pla' ing 2 drum beats and one s'mbol crash. %hen explain to students that the ratio o$ drumbeats to s'mbol crashes is 2 beats to 7 s'mbol crash. %hen repeat the drum beats twice to express * drums beats to 2 s'mbol crashes and explain to students that the !atios o$ 2:7 and *:2 are equi, alent.

%he teacher will as) students to ,olunteer other potential beat combinations. 6$ter students gain understanding o$ the concept and terms the will students will $irst de$ine )e' terms 1!atios and 5qui,alent !atios2 and orall' repeat the terms into Songi$' app on their Smart "hones.

The Lesson #tructure$ Acti%ities

&a%e the students $orm groups with their table partners. %hen ha,e the students demonstrate their understanding o$ !atios b' creating a ,ideo using the 3Mo,ie app on their 3"ads and uploading a ,ideo to 8ou%ube. 3n their ,ideos the students will explain and act out real li$e example o$ !atios and equi, alent ratios. 9nce the students are done uploading ,ideos( each group will present their ,ideo to the class.
Day "

.hile the students are creating their ,ideos( the teacher will circulate and assist students with an' questions the' ha,e. 3n addition( the teacher will assess $or understanding. %he teacher will use the students presentation as a means to monitor student understand o$ !atio concepts. .hile students wor) on their presentations( the teacher will circulate and chec) $or student understanding.

#sing the Garage 0and app on the 3"ad( the teacher will model a ratio o$ drumbeats to s'mbol crashes. %hen( ha,e the students continue to wor) in their groups and use the Garage 0and app on the 3"ad to create their own ratios using drum beats to s'mbols. %hen ha,e the students map out the number o$ drumbeats per 7: seconds and illustrated them as ratios. Students will then illustrate example o$ equi, alent !atios $or 2: seconds o$ music using their ;umbers app on their tablet. %he students will then create a <e'note in which the' pla' the beats the' created in Garage 0and and represent their beats mathematicall' as: Drumbeats to

S'mbols crashes= Drumbeats:S'mbol rashes= and Drumbeats/S'mbol crashes 1a to b( a:b( and a/b2. 6$ter students ha,e completed their <e'notes( the teacher will ha,e each group present their <e'note to the class.
Day 3

%he teacher will ha,e the students listen to a ratio song on 8ou%ube http://www.'outube.com/watch> ,?+hc!M@cgpb* then with a partner create their own ratio song comparing ,arious objects/subjects as ratios and upload to 8outube. %he studentsA song will ha,e at least & examples o$ equi, alent ratios. 6$ter the songs are uploaded to 8ou%ube the teacher will pla' the students songs $or the class.

%he teach will circulate and chec) $or student understanding will students are creating songs. %hen( a$ter songs are pla'ed $or the class the teacher will pro,ide $eed bac) as to the accurac' o$ the students wor).

'losing/Assessment

6t the end o$ the lesson student will go on computer and $ill out a Google $orm that will assess their )nowledge o$ <e' %erminolog'= %heir abilit' to recogniBe equi, alent !atios= and their abilit' to write ratios in & di$$erent wa's
