LITERACY LESSON PLAN Age/Grade Level: Kindergarten

Content Area: Literacy

Objective: The students will be able to create their farm animal sentence paper, including pictures and words. IN Standard/Foundation: EL.K 4.3 2006 Writing: Processes and Features- Write using pictures, letters, and words. Also fits Standard: EL.K.4.4 2006 Writing: Processes and Features- Write phonetically spelled words (words that are written as they sound) and consonant-vowel-consonant words (demonstrating the alphabetic principle). Example: Write correctly simple words, such as man, cat, and run, and spell other words as they sound, such as whale as wal, jumps as jmps, and bigger as bigr, showing an understanding of what letters represent certain sounds. Materials Needed/Media/Technology: Farm animal Babies and mothers worksheet White board with markers Flannel board and felt farm animals and barn Big Red Barn book by Margaret Wise Brown Pictures of typical farm animals Journals and crayon/pencil boxes for each child Farmer John Puppet I. MOTIVATION: To introduce the farm theme I will do a KWL chart with the children about what they know about farms and farm animals and what they want to know about farms and farm animals. At the completion of the unit we will complete the chart with what we have learned. GOAL FOR LEARNER: My goal is for the students to listen to the story I read, choose an animal that they think belongs on a farm. They will then draw a picture of the chosen farm animal and write a simple sentence about it. II. PROCEDURE: I will show them pictures of animals and ask if they think they belong on a farm, and for the ones they choose that belong on a farm I will place them on felt board by the barn. I will use my Farmer John puppet and I will read the story The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown. NEW INFORMATION: I will name the animals in the story along with the proper names of the young. CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING: The students will complete a worksheet that has them matching baby farm animals to their mothers. MODELING: I will explain to the children that it is their turn to draw a farm animal and write a sentence about it. I will model this for them on my white board by choosing an animal and drawing it. Then I will write a simple sentence about the animal on the board underneath my animal illustration. PRACTICE: The students will then get their journals out. I will give them a few minutes to decide which farm animal they would like to draw and write about. When they have decided I will direct them to use crayons to draw their animal and pencils to write their sentence. ASSESSMENT: I will go around the room and observe the children as they are writing and drawing. Any children who might need help with writing their sentence will be encouraged to try to sound out the words so that they will be able to write them.

CLOSURE: We will finish the activity by having each child share their work with the class. I will express to the students what a great job they did illustrating their papers and reading their sentences and how good their sentences are. I will express the importance of using capitals at the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end of sentences. We will sing Old Mac Donald before going on to next activity. EXTENSION: The class will continue to write sentences in their journals throughout the year. We will progress to paragraphs and full stories by the end of the year. III. EVALUATION- For assessment I checked the papers to make sure that the children are using proper punctuation and capitalization.
