Homework #2 for ME 478

Bar Element Due date: 4/18 (Friday) at TA class 1. (30pt) Using the direct stiness approach, determine: Nodal displacements Forces in each element Reactions (a) (15pt) E = 15 106 psi, A = 3 in2 , and k = 5000 lb/in.

(b) (15pt) Est = 200 GPa, Ast = 4 104 m2 , Eal = 70 GPa, and Aal = 2 104 m2 .

2. (20pt) Determine the nodal displacements and axial stress distribution using two equal-length elements. Let A = 2 in.2 and E = 3 106 psi.

3. (20pt) For bar elements shown in Figure, the global displacements have been determined to be u1 = 0.5 in., v1 = 0.0, u2 = 0.25 in., v2 = 0.75 in. Determine the local x displacements at each end of the bars and the axial stress in the bar element for A = 0.5 in.2 and E = 12 106 psi, and L = 60 in.

4. (30pt) For the truss shown in Figure, solve for the horizontal and vertical components of displacement at node 1 and determine forces in each element. All elements have A = 1 in.2 , E = 10 106 psi, and L = 100 in.
