Art Analysis Activity: Teacher Instructions: Place signs of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design around the room where visible. Display works of art that are going to be used for discussion. Have students begin at the center of the classroom. Have them walk toward the Element or Principle (the sign) that they believe is represented in the piece. From there, start a discussion as ask questions such as: What do you think the artist was trying to say by strongly using [fill in element or principle]? How does using [element/principle] in this piece make the viewers feel? What other elements or principles are used, but are not as obvious? What other elements or principles could the artist have used or not used? Also ask questions such as: What is the subject matter of this piece? What style of art is this piece? What is the medium that is used and how is it used effectively? What if this piece was a done in a different medium? Student Instructions: Stand in the middle of the classroom. Look around the classroom and identify each Element and Principle of Art and Design View and analyze the artwork that is presented and walk towards the Element(s)or Principle(s) that the artist uses in their piece

You will be placed in groups of 2 or 3 to make a presentation about MC Escher. In your presentation, you must include: 1. His biography a. Birth, Death, 3 facts about his life 2. His artwork a. Analyze 1 of Eschers work that seems interesting to you (remember our class activity) b. Talk about subject matter and medium c. Personal thoughts about the artwork *Bonus: How does piece you chose relate to math and art You may use in-class materials and the Internet to create this presentation. You may choose to: 1. Make a poster 2. Write 2-3 poems (at least one on his life, and one on his art) 3. Create an advertisement for MC Escher and his work 4.
