Army
The region of aak has yielded a number of military inscriptions. Soldiers, officers,
and legionary or auxiliary commanders dedicated altars to Roman and Egyptian deities
(2, 4-7, 9-13). In addition, soldiers or military units are mentioned on three fragmentary
inscriptions (18, 20, 23).
A number of inscriptions found in aak and its vicinity mention beneficiarii consularis.
These officers dedicated two altars to Diana and Jupiter (2, 7) and one to a deity whose
name is not preserved (13). In addition, one small fragment also mentions a beneficiarius
consularis (23). Two beneficiarii consularis serving in aak were detached from the legion
XI Claudia (2, 7), which garrisoned Durostorum in Lower Moesia. Epigraphic evidence
clearly shows that the unit regularly sent beneficiarii consularis to Dalmatia during the
third and second century. The officer whose name is not preserved might have served in
one of the Pannonian legions (X Gemina, XIV Gemina).
Epigraphic monuments from the collection of the National Museum in aak
testify to the presence of auxiliary units or detachments in the town or its vicinity. Most
inscriptions mention the cohort II milliaria nova Delmatarum equitata. Four commanders
and one decurio dedicated five altars to Roman and Egyptian deities (4, 5, 6, 11, 12). In
addition, a brick with the stamp of the cohort was discovered in the museum courtyard
(44). The cohort II milliaria Delmatarum was founded in 169 or 170, at the beginning
of Marcomannic wars of Marcus Aurelius. Epigraphic monuments from the National
Museum in aak imply that its camp was probably located in the town or its environs.
Epigraphic evidence from aak mentions one other auxiliary unit. Livius Maternus,
centurion of the cohort VIII voluntariorum Romanorum, dedicated an altar to Jupiter and
Genius loci in 197 (10). Since the units permanent garrison during the second and third
century was Tilurium, we presume that Maternus commanded a detachment stationed in
the region of aak. Its presence in the area could be explained in various ways. It might
have taken part in the building of fortifications or the auxiliary fortress. On the other
hand, the detachment of the cohort VIII voluntariorum civium Romanorum could have
been sent to reinforce the provincial border. Didius Iulianus, governor of Dalmatia in 176177, suppressed some hostes confines. Similar situation might have arisen at the end of the
second century and our vexillatio was presumably sent to deal with it and reinforce the
garrison at the northeastern border of Dalmatia.
Military inscriptions found in aak and its vicinity testify that a border station
between the provinces of Dalmatia and Moesia Superior was located in this region. One
assumes that the station of beneficiarii consularis chronologically preceded the auxiliary
fortress. Beneficiarii consularis probably served in aak or its environs during the second
century. In the last decades of that century, after 170, the border station was garrisoned
by the newly formed cohort II milliaria Delmatarum, under the command of Ti. Claudius
Gallus (5). It remained in the region during the third century, as is shown by the altar
dedicated to Jupiter in 253 (6).
104
The exact location of the station of beneficiarii consularis or of the auxiliary fortress
in the area of aak is impossible to determine. One must take in account two sites west
of the town. The first one is Jankovina, in Beljina, with the remains of Roman baths and
a settlement from the second and third century. The other site is Jezdina with traces of an
ancient agglomeration. The remains of a large building, which could be identified with the
station or castellum, were discovered in the bed of the Jezdina river.
Military inscriptions found in aak and its vicinity give rise to certain questions
concerning the history of northeastern Dalmatia. Beneficiarii consularis stationed in the
area might have supervised the road network. Important Roman roads crossed in the
region of aak and stations of the beneficiarii were often located on crossroads. One road
passing through the valley of the West Morava connected the valley of the Velika Morava
with the silver mines in the region of Domavia. Two other roads branched from the valley
of West Morava near aak. One led northward to the mining district of Rudnik and
Kosmaj, while the other led southward, across the mountain Jelica towards Novi Pazar.
Epigraphic monuments from the collection of the National Museum imply the
existence of mines in the area of aak. Beneficiarii consularis protected mining districts
and supervised ore transports. From the reign of Marcus Aurelius the region of aak
was garrisoned by the cohort II milliaria Delmatarum equitata. Comprising infantry and
cavalry, the unit was suitable for the protection of mining districts. The possible existence
of roman mines in the area of aak is corroborated by four dedications to Diana (1-4).
The goddess was especially revered among miners because of her connection with the
moon and silver. Traces of ancient mining were discovered in the vicinity of aak, in the
village Goraii, at the foot of the mountain Jelica.
Monuments of the cohort II milliaria Delmatarum record names of two as yet
unattested commanders of the unit. Tiberius Claudius Gallus should be identified with
the senator of the same name, consul suffectus and governor of Numidia and Dacia at
the beginning of the third century (5). The career of Quintus Sextilius Marinus remains
unknown (6). We only know that the cohort was under his command in 253.
Population
Inscriptions from the collection of the National Museum in aak offer scant evidence
on the population of the area. Four altars record members of the senatorial and equestrian
orders respectively. Asinius Maximus, governor of Dalmatia, appears as a dedicant of
an altar to Jupiter, along with the cohort II milliaria Delmatarum and its commander
Quintus Sextilius Marinus (6). His name was added in the autumn of 253 after Valerians
victory over the usurper Aemilianus. Asinius Maximus should probably be identified with
Maximus, consul ordinarius of 253.
Four altars record names of the equestrian tribunes of the cohort II milliaria
Delmatarum. Tiberius Claudius Gallus commanded our unit in the second half of II
105
century during the reign of Marcus Aurelius or his successor Commodus. The remaining
steps of his equestrian career remain obscure. By the middle of the last decade of the
second century, circa 195, he passed into the senatorial order. The last known phase of
his cursus was the governorship of Dacia in 205-206/207 (5). At the end of the second
century, certainly after Tiberius Claudius Gallus, the cohort II milliaria Delmatarum
was commanded by Gnaeus Pompeius Pollittianus (11, 12) and in the mid-third century,
precisely in 253, by Quintus Sextillius Marinus (6). Unfortunately, epigraphic evidence
offers no data on their origin or careers.
According to the military inscriptions, a border station between Dalmatia and Moesia
Superior was located in the area of aak. Among the soldiers serving in the station we
find a number of beneficiarii consularis and two officers of auxiliary troops. Beneficiarii
bear imperial gentilicia Iulius (2) and Aurelius (7), and the auxiliary officers bear nonimperial gentilicia Livius (10) and Statius (4). Titus Statius Crispinus, decurio of the cohort
II milliaria Delmatarum was probably recruited in a dalmatian family whose ancestor came
from Italy (4). The origin of Livius Maternus, centurion of the cohort VIII voluntariorum
civium Romanorum could not be determined.
All the members of the civilian population in the area of aak bear the imperial
gentilicium Aurelius (3, 15, 18, 21, 22). The fact implies that they might have belonged
to the native population and that they have obtained citizenship under Marcus Aurelius
or Caracalla. The most prominent among them was Aurelius Augustianus, decurio and
former duovir of the municipium Celegerorum in the third century (15). His tombstone
was found on the site of Jovania luka near Ivanjica.
Inscriptions from the collection of the National Museum in aak record a certain
number of members of the native population of Dalmatia. The area of aak was
inhabited by the Celtic tribe of Dindari, while Celegeri lived on the western border of
Moesia Superior. Onomastic data suggests that two women belonged to the native
population. They both bear Celtic names Bella (15) and Totia (17). Totia seems to have
originated from a romanized family, since her parents bear Latin names Proculus and
Marcella. Maximus, attested on an altar dedicated to Diana by his cousins, also belonged
to the native population of Dalmatia (3). His fathers name Scenocalus is of Illyrian origin.
Judging by the onomastic formula, consisting of the personal name and the fathers name
in genitive, Maximus was not a Roman citizen. His parents, however, were romanized to a
certain degree, since they gave their son a Latin name.
Religion
two monuments (9: Diana, 10: Genius loci). All these altars were dedicated by soldiers
serving in the border station. Two of them were commanders of the cohort II milliaria
Delmatarum Tiberius Claudius Gallus in the second half of the second II century (5),
and Quintus Sextilius Marinus in 253 (6). The centurion Livius Maternus commanded the
detachment of the cohort VIII voluntariorum civium Romanorum stationed in the area of
aak in 197 (10). One of the beneficiarii consularis, Aurelius from the legion XI Claudia,
also dedicated an altar to Jupiter (7). The fragmentary dedication to Jupiter, Diana and
Genius loci was probably set up by a member of a cohort (9).
The collection of the National Museum in aak contains four altars dedicated
to Diana (1-4). These monuments were erected by soldiers and civilians. Two soldiers
served in the border station. Iulius Capito, beneficiarius consularis, was detached from the
legion XI Claudia (2). Titus Statius Crispinus served as decurion in the cohort II milliaria
Delmatarum (4). One altar was dedicated by the three Aurelii for the health and welfare
of their cousin Maximus (3). In the case of Claudius Niger it is not possible to determine
whether he was a soldier or a civilian (1).
Two altars were dedicated to Genius loci. On the monument erected by Livius Maternus
in 197 the deity appears alongside Jupiter (10). The name of the person who erected the
altar to Jupiter, Diana, Genius loci and possibly Silvanus is not preserved (9). Mars Militaris
is attested only on one monument, erected by Cnaeus Pompeius Pollittianus, commander
of the cohort II milliaria Delmatarum, at the end of second century (11).
One altar from the collection of the National Museum in aak records the names
of the Egyptian gods Serapis and Isis (12). Their cult was widespread among the Roman
soldiers, who invoked the gods to lead them to victory. The dedicant of our altar was the
tribune Cnaeus Pompeius Pollittianus.
