Introduction
It is registered under the name Nike Inc. Founded on January 25, 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phillip Knight. The name Nike is derived from the name of the Greek Goddess if Victory. It markets sub brands like Nike golf, Nike pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike skateboarding, and subsidiaries like Cole Haan, Hurley International, Umbro and Converse. It employed more then 30000 people in the year of 2008 worldwide and had a turnover of 18.6 Billion Dollars for the same Fiscal year.

Origin and history


Operated as a distributor for Japanese shoe maker, Onitsuka Tiger, and was called Blue Ribbon Sports then. Profits grew, in 1967, BRS opened its first retail store at The Pico boulevard in Santa Monica, California. It launched its first line of footwear, which bared the newly designed SWOOSH sign, by Carolyn Davidson, in 1971.

The first shoe sold to the public was a soccer shoe called Nike. After which the company officially changed it name to Nike in the year 1978.
In the 1980s, Nike captured 50% of the market share and went public in the month of December of the same year. From the 1980s, Nike has grown to what it is today, becoming a multinational company, and having one of the biggest range of sport products available.

Acquisitions
Nikes first acquisition was upscale footwear company Cole Haan in 1988.

Nike bought surf apparel company Hurley from Bob Hurley in 2002.
Nike bought Converse Inc. in 2003 for 309 Million USD. Nike bought sports apparel supplier Umbro for 600 Million USD in the year of 2008

Manufacturing
Nike has contracted with more then 700 shops around the world

It has more then 45 offices located all around the World outside USA
It has factories in Indonesia, China, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Taiwan, Philippines and Malaysia. Nike world headquarters are in the city of Beaverton, Oregon, United States, 11 Kms West of Portland.

Environmental Record
Multinationals like such have a heavy consumption and wastage of textiles and related items therefore it effects the environment to a great extent by increasing water deficit, climate change, pollution, raw material and fossil fuel consumption. According to a survey conducted by New England based environmental organization, Nike ranks in one of the three top multinational climate friendly companies. Nike began a campaign on Earth day 2008, called the Thrash talk shoe Nike also came up with a program called Nike Grind. Nike also came up with a project called the Nikes Reuse-a-shoe program.

Market Strategy
Nike Is positioned as a premium brand manufacturing expensive and designer products. It lures its customers with a marketing strategy centered around a brand image attained b a distinct logo and a brand slogan, Just do it. Nike indulges into sponsorship agreements with celebrity athletes, professional teams and college athletic teams. Nike also indulges in promotion through mass media, i.e. through television, radio, internet, news paper etc.

It also indulges in sale seasons and special offers such as discounts etc for regular customers.
Nike products are all under warranties of different magnitude therefore much in demand.
