Basketball and Math Facts

1. 2. math fact flashcards (one set per team) basketballs (one per team) poly dots (two per team) star number cards (red and yellow) PE Central NASPE Divide class into groups of four and place the same number of poly spots across a line at the end of the gym. Each group goes to a poly spot Scatter star number cards (cut-out stars with random numbers written on them) all over the rest of the gym - starting about 10 feet away from the groups. Give each team a stack of math flash cards and a poly spot (this will be their "basket" to collect stars). The team selects one math card problem at a time; they solve the problem and then one member dribbles the basketball out onto the court. That person then tries to find star number cards that have numbers that total the answer of the math fact (i.e., 5X6: could be three tens; a ten and four fives; two tens, two fives, and five twos, etc.) Each person can only pick up one star number card, then they must dribble the ball back to their teams poly spot. Place the star number card on the other poly spot (their basket) and pass the ball to the next teammate to go find the next number that will equal the total. Once the team has the numbers that add up to the total of the fact, they can flip the next card and solve that multiplication fact and find the appropriate stars. This is a continuous activity. If a team completes a set of cards, the teacher should provide a new set.
