O&ser'ation Pa!er
(or )y o&ser'ation !a!er$ I *e+i*e* to ,o u! Bi, -otton.oo* -anyon$ a&out a
thir* of the .ay u!$ an* +li)& *o.n to )y fa'orite s!ot &y the strea). I sat on a &i, ,rey
ro+/ loo/in, u! strea) for a .hile$ ta/in, in the s+enery.
E'en thou,h it is the en* of !ril$ it is still /in* of +hilly. The +ool &ree0e sen*s
,oose &u)!s *o.n )y &o*y &efore I +an ,et a +han+e to !ut )y hoo*ie on. The 1!rin,
air s)ells so fresh$ the &ree0e ,ently rattles the ne.ly leafe* trees$ )a/in, an
une2!laina&le soft an* rela2in, soun*3 al)ost li/e a !urr$ or a soft hush. It is ni+e to see
e'erythin, turnin, ,reen a,ain. That is one of the reasons that I hate the .inter$ it )a/es
e'erythin, loo/ so *ra& an* lifeless.
I a) soothe* &y the 4uiet ,ur,les of the strea). That$ so)e +hir!in, &ir*s$ the
hush of the trees$ an* the soft soun* of the o++asional +ar *ri'in, !ast$ are all that I hear. I
5u)! off the ro+/ an* /neel *o.n to the .ater to ,et a *rin/. T tastes &etter than the ta!
.ater that is .aitin, for )e in )y &ase)ent a!art)ent. The .ater is +ol* an*
refreshin,6an* +ol*. Di* I )ention +ol*7 I ha'e to 5a) )y han*s into )y s.eatshirt8s
!o+/et sin+e they are !ra+ti+ally free0in, no.9
I +an ne'er see) to sit still for 'ery lon,$ so I start .al/in, u! strea)$ 5u)!in,
&a+/ an* forth o'er .et ro+/s$ tryin, to a'oi* fallin, in the i+y .ater. It8s har*er than it
loo/s &e+ause a lot of the) are +o'ere* in )oss$ .hi+h is sli+/$ es!e+ially .hen it is .et9
Lu+/ily I )ana,e* not to fall in this ti)e. lar,e tree trun/ *ares )e to fully +ross the
strea) sin+e it is layin, a+ross it so !erfe+tly. I &alan+e )y .ay a+ross$ an* .al/ throu,h
so)e trees to a lar,e +har+oal +olore* ro+/ fa+e is. There is a little +re'i+e that is 5ust
&arely out of )y rea+h$ it loo/s li/e it +oul* &e a little +a'e &ut I +an8t see it .ell enou,h.
I e2!e+t that so)e little +reatures +all it ho)e. I a) sur!rise* a+tually$ that I ha'en8t
really seen )u+h .il*life yet$ o&'iously the !lants an* s!i*ers$ &ut I ha'en8t seen any
ani)als.
It starts ,ettin, *ar/er faster than I .as e2!e+tin,$ so I )a/e )y .ay &a+/ to )y
ori,inal ro+/. I fell as I .as tryin, to +li)& &a+/ to .here I ha* !ar/e*$ the hill .as
stee!er than e2!e+te* an* I +oul*n8t ,et a ,oo* foothol*. -oin+i*entally thou,h$ I ,ot to
see a s4uirrel starin, at )e fro) a &ran+h. I i)a,ine he .as )o+/in, )e for &ein, so
+lu)sy$ &ut I silently for,i'e hi) sin+e he .as the first ani)al I ,ot to see to*ay. This
ti)e$ I too/ a runnin, start to try to ,et u! the sli!!ery hill. The )o)entu) hel!e* an* I
finally )a*e it u! to )y +ar .here I !ull out )y note&oo/ an* start .ritin,6
