February was full of love
thanks to the Valentines Day
festivities that took place across
Etna High School. As part of the
celebration, the FFA Horticulture
class conducted a Valentines Day
candy gram fundraiser. Starting on
the 3rd and ending on the 13th, the
horticulture class sold two kinds of
candy grams that were both very
clever. Te frst option was a pack-
age of Rollos wrapped in red paper
with black pipe cleaner sticking out
the end, intended to make the can-
dy look like a stick of dynamite. On
the tag the clever words, Youre the
bomb, were written. Te second
option was a decorative clear bag
with a shovel placed inside, flled
with M&Ms and sealed at the top.
Te tag of this delicious treat was,
I dig you. Both candy grams sold
very well and the horticulture class
was able to practice the decorative
skills that they learned and make a
proft.

Ofcers Present
to Rotary Club
On Tursday, February 20th
FFA Ofcers Emma Morris, Colton
Dickinson, Jennifer Apland, Angela
Rickey, and Haylee Kaae along with
Ag Advisor Kellie Hargett were up
bright and early to give a FFA pre-
sentation to the local Rotary Chap-
ter at Bobs Ranch House. Te of-
cers addressed many of the aspects
of the Etna FFA Chapter including
raising animals and taking them to
fair, and SAE projects in general.
Colton demonstrated how to start a
home grown avocado plant through
a hands on activity that allowed Ro-
tarians that chose to participate
to start their own plant and take it
home. Kellie Hargett talked about
the Ag Incentive grant and why it
is important. Hargett stated, Every
year the FFA presents to the Rota-
ry Chapter and it is always a good
event for our club as well as theirs.
Overall the presentation went very
well.
Farm Power
Hours of dedication and practice
fnally paid of this month for the
Etna FFA Farm Power team. On
March 8th the team took frst place
out of twenty fve teams at the UC
Davis Field Day. Oldest member
Jack Hurlimann stated, Im sur-
prised that weve got this far. Im
proud of our team, and I would like
to thank our coach Mr. Hargett for
being such a huge help.
For those who arent aware,
Farm Power is a contest that is
made up of fve parts; tractor
operations, parts ID, trouble shoot-
ing, general written test, and safety
test. During a competition the team
is tested on their knowledge of
farm equipment from all of these
aspects. Unlike many contests, the
contestants are actually required
to maneuver a tractor through a
course of cones , sometimes with a
trailer, in both forward and reverse.
Te Etna Farm power team is made
up of 5 members; Jack Hurlimann,
Frank Hurlimann, Jace Cramer, and
Trevor Tupman with Ben Morris as
an alternate this year. Te team has
had a great year and made some
great memories. When asked if
the team had any inside Jokes Jack
explained that at one practice his
younger brother Frank was driving
a tractor through a course made
up of cones. Frank accidentally
ran over every single cone which
sparked the idea in Jacks mind of
creating a t-shirt for the team with
the slogan, cone hunters.
Te team continues to prac-
tice once a week for a few hours to
prepare for the State Contest that
will be Held in Fresno this April.
Te goal is to get frst place, but its
going to be hard to do because state
is such a difcult contest, Jack said.
I have learned a lot and am still
learning a lot along with my team.
Farm power has defnitely helped
me become more knowledgeable
about equipment. Jack plans to
attend Shasta College next year
and take classes in Shop such as
diesel mechanics, heavy equipment
operations, and welding. As for the
rest of the team they still have a few
more years at EHS before they have
to start making choices about what
they will do afer high school.
