Literacy Foundations
Learn to identify letters of the alphabet and print; recognize and understand basic symbols; learn numbers and simple sequencing; learn simple words for living
in Canada. No formal education is needed. All are welcome.
CLB 1 - Getting Started
Begin to participate in Canadian culture. Learn
to greet people and introduce yourself; ask and
answer simple questions; fll out simple forms;
understand basic math concepts, tell time and use
Canadian money.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 1
CLB 2 - Moving On
Through listening, speaking, reading and writing
activities along with grammar and vocabulary
development, this course will help you to engage
in conversation; increase ability to read and write
simple English tasks and gain more independence
to settle in Ottawa.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 2.
CLB 3 - Feeling at Home in English
Expand basic language skills for everyday and
academic purposes; participate in conversations
on a variety of familiar and new topics; begin to
link simple sentences; read a variety of adapted
texts; and expand knowledge of vocabulary and
grammatical structures.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 3
CLB 4- Moving Towards Your Goals
Be part of a friendly atmosphere where individual
needs are considered. Prepare for more advanced
specialty courses. Learn new vocabulary for
everyday conversation and practice writing skills.
The course includes feld trips, guest speakers and
many cultural events.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 4.
CLB5 Aiming Higher
Gain confdence in using English in both formal
and informal situations. Focus will be on idiomatic
phrases, slang, introduction of Job Search and
interview techniques and improving writing skills
to be able to write simple paragraphs and letters so
as to more efectively begin settling in Ottawa.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5 in two skill areas.
CLB 6 New Horizons
This course is designed to increase confdence to
communicate efectively, both in the classroom
and in the larger community. Classroom activities
will include: student oral presentations; reading
and understanding newspaper articles; writing
simple reports; understanding grammatical
concepts; refne listening skills through authentic
TV and radio broadcasts.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 6 in two skill areas.
CLB 7 + Widening Perspectives
Through a combination of practical skills and
academic learning this course will prepare you for
a successful life in Canada. Refne presentation and
conversation skills, use of idiomatic phrases, and
focus on reading and writing for employment and
academic purposes. Improve fuency, confdence
and refne social networking skills.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 7 or higher.

Conversation CLB 2 - I Want to Talk
Put those new pronunciation skills into practice! In
small groups, develop confdence as you practice
the basics of talking to other people in English. This
class will assist you in settling more comfortably in
Ottawa.

Conversation CLB 4 - Speaking Up More
At this level, you will converse comfortably with
others and learn to answer simple questions
on familiar topics, using short sentences; tell a
simple story about everyday activities; speak
about something you did in the past (or will do in
the future); give instructions and directions; and
express satisfaction or dissatisfaction. This will also
prepare you for your Citizenship Test.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 4 in Speaking

Grammar & Writing CLB 5
This course is designed for students who want to
focus on improving their grammar and writing
skills. Students will be able to review and practice
relevant grammar points, especially sentence
structure. They will begin using the writing process;
write paragraphs and essays; use conventional
formats for various purposes, including letters,
emails, memos, and reports; and practice error
correction.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5 in Writing

Academic Grammar & Writing -
CLB 6+
In this class, you will develop and refne your
writing skills in preparation for either academic
tests or professional careers. You will write
paragraphs, essays, summaries as well as letters,
emails and reports.

Skill-Building for TOEFL iBT Test
Preparation CLB 6
This course will gradually prepare students for
the Intermediate and Advanced Internet-based
TOEFL Test. Its aim is to familiarize learners with the
skills and strategies for each of the four sections of
the test, namely, listening, speaking, reading and
writing.
Prerequisites: Working on CLB 6

ibt TOEFL Preparation CLB 7+
This course will teach students skills and strategies
in preparation for the Internet-based TOEFL exam.
Working in an academic English environment,
intensive practice will be put on TOEFL listening,
speaking and writing. As well as frequent simulated
TOEFL tests.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 7 or higher.

Listening/Speaking & Pronunciation - CLB 3/4
Focus on your ability to hear process and produce the sounds and rhythms of Canadian English.
Systematically practice syllables and sentence structure. Improved listening skills will lead to better
appreciation of and participation in - everyday conversations, both inside and outside the class.

ESL Childcare Worker Program
The objective of this course is to prepare students
for self-sustainable employment through opening
a home daycare, or working as an assistant in a
licensed daycare, or prepare for ECE training through
colleges. Students will receive 30 hours of hands-on
practicum experience as well as First Aid and CPR
training. To successfully complete this course 80%
attendance is required in addition to the hands-on
practicum.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5 in Listening and Speaking
and CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.

ESL Ofce Assistant
This course is designed to provide students with
sufcient skills and knowledge to fnd entry level
employment in an ofce setting. Students will
acquire vocabulary specifc to ofce procedures,
business terminology, and data entry and specifc
computer applications. Students will have the
opportunity to practice what they learn in the
classroom in a 30-hour hands-on placement.
Prerequisite: Students interested in this course should
be comfortable with technology and have a basic
knowledge of computers. Students should be working
on CLB 5 in Reading and Writing and CLB 6 in Listening
and Speaking.

Food and Beverage Smart Serve
Certifcation
This new training program covers the required
language and skills for employment in the growing
hospitality industry in Ottawa. It includes 30 hours
of work placement training. Upon successful
completion of the course and test students will earn
an Ontario SMART SERVE Certifcate.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5 or higher.

The objective of this course is to prepare students
with industry-focused vocabulary, understanding
and conversational knowledge to work successfully
in the Canadian Retail and Sales sector.

ESL Home Support Certifcate
This course is designed to provide students with
sector-specifc language skills and knowledge of
rules and regulations in order to be able to assist in
care-giving in the health feld. Students will receive

Computer Basics Keyed Up?
If you have little or no experience with computers,
this is the place to start. You will learn the basic
terminology needed to understand how to use
the computer. Emphasis will be on learning how to
touch-type and to increase your speed and accuracy
while working on English language skills.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5, no previous computer
skills required.

ESL for Sewing
The objective of this course is to equip students with
the tools and skills necessary to create their own
employment or to work in a related feld. Through
this course students will learn to use sector specifc
vocabulary and learn about customer relations. This
course consists of 2 levels.
Prerequisite: Level 1 No previous experience or
knowledge of sewing and working on CLB 3 in
Speaking.
Level 2 Some knowledge or previous experience with
sewing, familiar with tools used and working on CLB 5

ESL for the DEAF
This class focuses on helping those who are
DEAF learn to communicate using American Sign
Language (ASL) as well as developing the reading
and writing skills in English. Classes are kept small to
provide individual attention.

Get ready for the Citizenship test, using the new
ofcial guide, Discover Canada: The Rights and
Responsibilities of Citizenship, and prepare for
the interview with a citizenship judge. Even if

be glad you applied yourself
Building on your Computer Basics skills, you will
learn to produce, save and print professional
looking documents, e.g. memos, resumes, letters,
spreadsheets, and create presentations, using
Windows and Microsoft Word, MS Excel and MS
PowerPoint and Explorer. You will also learn to
navigate the Internet, using browsers and search
engines for on-line searches for home and work
purposes.
Prerequisite: Working on CLB 5 in two skills and

Computerized Bookkeeping
This course is ofered in two parts. In the frst part,
you will become familiar with the vocabulary
necessary for bookkeeping. You will learn about
fnancial statements, petty cash, work sheets
and bank reconciliation. In the second half of the
program, you will apply this knowledge, using
the computer program, Simply Accounting for
Windows.

Photoshop
Build web pages, starting from the basics and
moving on to more advanced skills. Become
familiar with the vocabulary used in a technical
and creative environment. Create and upload
to the Internet at least one professional quality
multi-page website. Learn how to use graphical
software, create graphics that can be used on
websites, and learn to fx photographs, change
images and restore old or damaged ones. By
the end of the course acquire an in demand,
marketable skill.
Prerequisite: CLB 4 or higher, ability to operate
Windows-based computer. Knowledge of MS Word or
equivalent would be an asset.
