Maintenance cost optimization

In todays competitive environment, the reduction of maintenance costs for
power plants is one of the key requirements of power producers. The GT24 XL
upgrade is an evolutionary improvement that has been derived from the GT24 MXL
upgrade and packs recent technological advances and many years of operational
experience into an attractive maintenance cost reduction upgrade for Alstoms
GT24 gas turbines.
Increased availability minor investment
The GT24 XL upgrade is designed to extend the hot gas path components
lifetime and the gas turbines inspection interval by up to an additional
4,000 operating hours at the same performance level. This increases availability
and reduces maintenance costs.
The lifetime benets are based on improved coating and cooling schemes for
turbine hot gas path components. The XL upgrade does not impact emission limits
and can be implemented on site during a scheduled type C hot gas path inspection.
Commercial operation of the rst GT24 MXL upgrade commenced in January 2007
and has since operated successfully. The XL upgrade package is suitable for gas and
oil operation, and has also proven successful in fuel switchover machines.

Technical concept and modications
The XL upgrade combines various modications to the
turbine that allow a safe inspection interval increase without
affecting reconditioning exchange scenario, performance
and reliability.
It is an evolutionary step, based on experience and concepts
proven across Alstoms global eet. For example, the XL
upgrade comes with an improved turbine coating, optimized
cooling and tighter clearances that have been fully validated
and are also proven in the eld.

interval extension, TBC protection is
enhanced both on the HP Turbine as
well as on the rst two stages of the
LP Turbine.

ensure that the hot gas path components lifetime is
extended and enable you to cut maintenance costs.

GT24 XL UPGRADE
Evolution based on experience and expertise
The new service operating data counter (ODC)
The GT24 XL upgrade requires a new ODC based on a more differentiated view of
cyclic events and operating hours in order to extend the inspection interval. Three
alternative criteria are used to determine the C inspection interval:
Weighted cyclic events (WCE): Account for the differing impact on components
of high-load starts and stops or partial-load stops as well as sudden load jumps
during a frequency response.
Weighted operation hours (WOH): Recognize the varying impact of the fuel
composition and grid support.
Equivalent operating hours (EOH): Consider the combination of cyclic events and
operating hours on component lifetime.

The GT24 XL turbine upgrade is designed for customers who prefer to keep the
proven GT24 technology and want to benet from an extended service interval.
