(a) (i) What is homeostasis ? (1m)
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant
internal environment .
(ii ) State the importance of homeostasis .(4m)
Organism can live and adapt themselves in a
wide range of habitats and environments .
Provides a stable internal environment for
cell to function optimally .
Metabolic rates and activities could be
increased or decreased at anytime .
Enzymes can function optimally .

(b) Explain how the blood sugar level is maintained
within the normal range of 75mg-110mg .(10m)
The increase in glucose level is detected by
the pancreas
The Islet cells in the pancreas secrete the
hormones insulin o and glucagon into
bloodstream .
Insulin reduces the blood glucose level and
promotes the conversion of glucose to
glycogen .
Glucagon increase the blood glucose level and
promote the conversion of glycogen to glucose.
Through the negative feedback mehanism , the
concentration of blood glucose is maintained .

(c) Explain how the urine of a diabetic patient
contains glucose .
