Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby

MEDIA RELEASE:
11 May 2014

Action at Last

The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby today welcomes the Tasmanian
Governments announcement of a Ministerial Taskforce to review the Tasmanian
Disability Education Support System.

All children deserve a quality education and the current system is failing families of
students living with disability. There are many improvements that need to be made in
the Tasmanian Disability Education Support System and we congratulate the
Tasmanian Government for committing to a real reform process in order to improve
the support students living with disability receive.

Today the Tasmanian Education Minister has shown his commitment to students
living with disability by his preparedness to listen to parents concerns and initiate an
independent review of the disability education support system. All students have the
right to fulfil their potential and we expect that the proposed taskforce will explore
ways to make this a reality for students living with disability.

The Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby looks forward to being a part of
the proposed taskforce and working with all stakeholders to ensure that the right
structural changes occur within the disability education support system. Thus
allowing students living with disability to access a quality education and great
educational outcomes.

We welcome the formation of the independent ministerial taskforce to review
the Tasmanian Disability Support System. This is the start of real change for
students living with disability and their families. A review in and of itself will
not solve the problem but it will lead to real constructive conversations about
what works well and what doesnt work in our disability education support
system and most importantly what changes are required to fix the issues faced
by students living with disability in our schools. Its time for a real
conversation about how to make the system better.
