Guiding Question: Introducing New Topics

Brief description (3-5 bullets) of activity during participation:

- The teacher tries to incorporate past material that is relevant to the current topic.
- The teacher asks the class questions about previous material.
- The teacher doesnt give in until she receives an answer from the students. As a last
resort, she has them open their notebooks and find out the answer from their notes.
- When the opportunity arises, the teacher will relate the material to real life events.

Reflection on Participation Experience:

I think the way the teacher introduces new material is a great idea. I really like the way
she has the students retrieve prior knowledge. In math it is so important to remember each
new topic, because new topics build off of old ones. Because of this, a teacher should never
really run out of ideas to connect new material to old material. I think not giving in is another
good quality. To me, iut seems that if you, as a teacher, give in to the student often, the
student will not make an effort to answer your questions because they feel the teacher will
just give it out. An analogous situation is portrayed in Ferris Buelers Day Off when the
history teacher is boring the students to death while asking them questions. When nobody
responds, the teacher gives the answer and moves on. Intellectually challenging the students
is a good method to use. If not a single student remembers, instead of giving the answer,
having the students look back in their notes is the next best thing. It teaches them to not
always to rely on the teacher or another classmate for the answer. The answer can be found in
their notes, they just have to look for it.
