When a cylinder rolls on a surface, the force resisting its motion is termed as

rolling friction. Rolling friction is considerably less than sliding friction. The
limiting friction of a roller is equal to the applied force with which the roller
just starts moving.

Wide tyres of soft rubber are ideal for griping the roads. Have you ever seen the use of such tyres? Where?
Pulley
Fig 3.2.1
Weigh the pan by a physical
balance or electric balance.
Level the horizontal wooden or glass surface with the help of a spirit
level.
il the pulley attached with the horizontal surface to reduce friction.
Tic one end of the string with the hoo! of the roller and other end with the pan by passing the string
over the pulley. The string between the hoo! and the pulley should be horizontal.
, "ut a small weight in the pan and observe the roller. #dd more small weights gradually till the
roller begins to move slowly.
$ote the total mass in the pan and multiply it
with 'g' to find the weight.
Repeat the e%periment three times and find the
average value of limiting friction & 1_Whyis the rolling friction always
less than the sliding friction?
