About the Students
About the Students
The rigorous admission process for IIM Ranchi, reinforces the IIM hallmarks of setting high standard and encompassing
the very best. IIM Calcutta actively supported and guided the selection of candidates based on group discussions & interviews,
CAT (Common Admission Test) percentile set at 99.65 ensuring top 0.35 percent of the candidates appeared for the
examination. The strict criterion associated with need for diverse background has resulted in the selection of intellectually
capable and motivated students for all the batches.
The diversity and excellence is demonstrated through different academic backgrounds, industry exposure and other interests.
IIM Ranchi has students from some of the most august undergraduate colleges in India, to name a few, Indian Institute of
Technology, St Xavier's College Mumbai, Shri Ram College of Commerce, in the field of Engineering, Commerce, Fine Arts
and Bio-Technology. Many of our students have rich industry exposure with leading Companies in India like HSBC, L&T,
IBM, SAIL, Accenture, Vodafone and Tata Teleservices.
As we move our feet in this new century, India is poised to take a giant leap into the global economy, empowered by world-
class managerial capability spawned by the best Institutes in this country.
Being an integral part of 8th IIM, we all feel an extreme sense of pride in introducing this young Institute to the global arena.
Your support, encouragement and faith in this endeavor will be critical to our success as a leading management Institute.
IIMR
About the Institute
Continuing the tradition of excellence in management education, as represented by the Indian Institutes of Management,
the eighth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible with the extensive
support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jharkhand, working under the guidance of
HRD Ministry, Government of India.
IIM Ranchi has been set up to serve the increasing demand for quality managers in the corporate world, whilst striving for
excellence and working towards its core value of inclusive growth for the greater good.
IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM as its flagship program and has launched PGPEX recently for research work.
The course outline has been meticulously designed, and is being delivered by world-renowned faculty of IIM Calcutta and
XLRI Jamshedpur. The course structure involves the updated and changing needs of modern management, recognized
and incorporated by the unique approach of teaching and learning at the IIMs, which sets them apart from other business
schools. The pedagogy involves special emphasis on application of theoretical concepts and understanding the intricacies
of management.
What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul - Joseph Addison

Dear Friends
The Indian economy has left the global recession behind and is now once again heading towards attaining a growth rate
of over 9%. New manufacturing capacities are being created and foreign investors are seeing attractive business opportunities
in this country. The employment potential is growing, especially for persons with good education and skills. The products of
Institutes of Management have always been in high demand, and I expect this situation to continue for many years in the
future.
IIM Ranchi is a new institution which started PGP classes in 2010. The Board of Governors are determined that it should
grow into an institution of excellence, where the quality education and the campus experience compares with the best
management schools in India. Being new, gives us the opportunity to learn from the experience of other IIMs and incorporate
changes which will help us move faster towards our goal. The faculty of IIM Calcutta and XLRI Jamshedpur are helping us
to develop all our educational systems and is also teaching most of the courses. I believe we could not have found a better
way to start.
We are also exploring possible ways of mobilizing funds which can be used for furthering the objective of attaining academic
excellence. We have already started attracting some experienced and reputed faculty to IIMR so that they can take over
from the faculty of IIMC and continue to strengthen our systems, and the quality of teaching.
The Board and I look forward to the continued support from industry and business organizations in India and abroad in our
endeavour to develop bright, young and highly motivated managers for them.
Best wishes.

Directors Address
It gives me immense pleasure to present the first batch of 44 students
for placement in leading organizations in India and abroad. We
basically selected students with high level of intelligence as seen by
our median CAT score of 99.65 percentile which is higher than that
of the leading IIMs. They have been taught by the best Finance faculty
from IIM Calcutta and the best in Marketing from the Industry. Three
of our students specializing in HRM did two terms in XLRI, which is
the best in the same area. Additionally, we have had faculty from
US, UK and Philippines imparting most up-to-date knowledge to our
students. We also used visiting faculty from the Industry to expose
them to practical aspects of business.
Our students have been exposed to courses on Inner Development
and Indian culture. They also are exposed to social problems and
environmental issues. A culture of humility, service and teamwork is
the hall-mark of every student and employee of this Institute. As an
example, I would like to cite the case of our senior students going
to the airport and railway station to receive every one of the junior
students.
Since our batch size is small, we have spent considerable amount
of time at the individual level to make our students Industry-Ready.
Above all, we put a lot of emphasis on character building and formation
of right attitudes required for survival in todays complex organization.
I am sure that you will find our students well-rounded and suited to
effectively manage the people, process and technologies and contribute
to the growth and devel opment of your organi zati ons.

IIM Ranchi is perfectly poised to become the centre of Oriental Wisdom
and the finest temple of learning and wisdom in this part of the world.
Its key differentiator is not just its cutting edge curriculum or the galaxy
of leading faculty drawn from all over the world or even the quality
of its students. Instead, it is poised on a troika of factors. First, is the
humility of its students to learn and their readiness to contribute their
knowledge, skills and abilities fruitfully in the corporate world. Second,
is their ability to contextualize their learning in the emerging landscape
of business--an intersection of government, business and society.
Third, they have experienced personalization at both the levels: self
development and a voluntary selection of portfolio of courses based
upon their aptitude and career interests. Overall, the graduating batch
of students are endowed with the perfect combination of knowledge,
skills and attitude to manage uncertainties, resolve ambiguities and
lead ethically in this hyper competitive, hyper turbulent, diverse and
globalized world. I take immense pride in offering these budding
managers and leaders to your organization.

Dear Friends
06
Indian management education has largely been shaped
by theories and models developed in the western world,
particularly the United States of America. With the economic
liberalization process initiated by the Government of India
in the early '90s the demand for management education
has been on the rise in India. We now have more than
3000 Institutions that offer management education in the
country. With stagnation in the enrollment in the West,
several internationally reputed schools are eying on the
Indian market for more students. In this context, IIM Ranchi
cannot be yet another business school offering the typical
US model of education.
Interestingly the Western scholars like Warren Bennis and
James O Toole, Henry Mintzberg, Jeffrey Pfeffer and
Christina Fong, Harry De Angelo and Linda De Angelo,
Jerry Zimmerman have observed several flaws in the
management education and are on the lookout for new
formats. For example, most of us would agree with the
observation by Pfeffer and Fong that management educators
have lost their souls and that altruistic values have been
supplanted by a show-me-the-money mindset among
MBA students. Lack of industry relevance, loss of scholarly
focus, over emphasis on competition, fixation upon MBA
program ranking and money-by-any means attitude are
some of the key comments made by these scholars.
Ms D Purandeswari, Minister of State for Human Resource
Development, made the following observation during the
inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of IIMC - "The
recent corporate scams have raised serious questions on
the usefulness of management education. Critics maintain
that management education in leading business schools to
create profit seekers who have scant respect for social
development". All these point to the fact that MBA education
is at the cross-roads and we have a great opportunity to
develop a new format that is holistic and would have
universal appeal and reach.
It is heartening to note that several scholars in India already
have developed path braking theories on management
based on our epics and Vedas. Spirituality and Management
is being researched not only in India, but by scholars around
the world. We also have unique Indian case studies and
models that are used by B Schools around the world.
However, it will be premature to discard the western models.
Consequently, the vision for IIM Ranchi has been built on
the concept of erudite fusion of 'western processes and
technologies for knowledge creation and dissemination' and
'the wisdom the East' for holistic development of students,
businesses and the society at large.

Student Activities
The students at IIM Ranchi know that they are the building blocks of
a great Institute and the members of the torch-bearing batch. This
realization has added to the overall vitality of the batch and developed
a sense of responsibility in whatever they do.
When the students of the first batch had joined the Institute, IIM Ranchi
was merely a concept. A lot of work had to be done to transform it into
a reality. Any Institution is more than just bricks and mortars and a few
classrooms. There were traditions to be formed, expectations to be lived
upto and standards to be set. This challenged the students to bring out
their best, and then some more. The factor that drives the students here
i s that whatever they do wi l l be handed over to posteri ty.
For this reason, you will find that the students here are always occupied
with some or the other activities. While in one of the hostel rooms, a
heated discussion is on to decide the name of the marketing club, in
some other room you will find the IT committee planning the whole IT
infrastructure of the Institute.

Elsewhere the sports committee is busy scheduling
the next table tennis tournament. In a nutshell, the
Institute is developing a student driven approach which
is subtly directed by the faculty and administration.
Though the Institution is hardly six months old, a gamut
of clubs and committees have already been set up
and witness enthusiastic student participation. The
various committees that ensure a proactive student
involvement are - the Placement Committee, Mess
& Facilities Committee, Sports & Cultural Committee,
PGP Committee and Literary & PR Committee. All the
committees strive to fulfil the basic student requirements,
to build corporate tie-ups, and to ensure a smooth
functioning of the whole student body. Various
management clubs have also been formed. These
include Finesse, Sankriya, Marquess, Gnosiomania,
and Samarpan. The clubs provide the students an
opportunity to follow their interests and to help in an
all round development.

The PGP Committee serves as the single point of contact between the students and the academic section of the college. Apart
from sorting out academic issues/grievances of the students, the Committee members are also required to ensure that all
communication by the college regarding assignments, schedules and various other academic affairs are directed towards the
students. This ensures a smooth functioning of the student body.
IT Committee
The IT Committee at IIM Ranchi was formed with the primary intent of integrating technology with learning. The students in this
Committee are not only responsible for establishing LAN/ WiFi connectivity in the campus but also for conceptualizing and designing
the IIM Ranchi website and students blog. Currently, the Committee is working on the implementation of the ERP and LMS
(Learning Management System). The infrastructure will be enhanced to include Smart Classrooms/ Library to facilitate learning
through course lectures as well as corporate interactions.
Sports and Cultural Committee
The Sports and Cultural Committee endeavors to develop cultural harmony amongst the students and a sense of freedom to
express and share our ideas Sports do not build characters they reveal it. We are shrouded by this question of tell me about
your weakness and strengths. Well sports can be helpful to give an insight in our own personality. Coming to ground realities
we have organized a lot of intra-college events like Badminton competition, TT tournament, Chess competition, Volleyball league
etc. This Committee is also responsible for monitoring various events happening at other B Schools and promotes participation
in these events.
Committees on Campus
Marquess The Marketing Club
Marquess provides a platform where students can practice
their learning and hone up their skills while contributing and

constantly thrives for new ways
to share vibrant ideas that lie
inside the budding marketers.
Finesse The Finance Club
At the Finance Club of IIM Ranchi,
we aim to connect the students
between the classroom and the
practical life. Periodic speaker sessions from various sectors
of financial services industry are organized to give students a
rich feel of the various aspects of practical issues. We also
organize periodic quiz and case competitions to help the students
test their knowledge and skills in finance. Students have been
provided with Tradecracker which is an online financial trading
simulator where students use virtual money to understand the
risks and returnsattached with various financial instruments
where price feeds come directly from NSE, MCX and NCDEX.
AAYAM The Entrepreneurship Club
A successful business does not necessarily start with huge
investment. Rather, it starts with a simple idea. Members of
AAYAM focus on innovation, integrity, openness and team work
in finding the right knowledge tools and channels to take the
concept of commerce. The club aims to tap the potential ideas,
which generally are thought of during
coffee breaks in between lectures, and
works towards their refinement. B-Plans
are discussed by presenting it to all the
students and their feasibility and capability
is analyzed.
Quizneyland The Quizzing Club
Formed by a group of passionate quizzers,
Quizneyland targets knowledge building
through various events quizzes, debates
and youth parliament. The quiz also
updates the their blog and Facebook

Colloquium
Colloquium 2011, is a series of guest lectures to empower
the students. The Program aims at introducing the students to
different business functions and giving them a flavour of the
organizational culture. As part of the program, senior executives
from different domains are invited to share their personal and
professional experiences. These executives speak on a variety
of topics covering the areas such as Finance, Marketing,
Consultancy, Operations and HR. This not only enables the
students to develop business competencies but also help them
improve on their soft skills. This event makes them understand
the Dos and Donts of corporate life. Scheduled at very beginning
of the MBA curriculum, this Program empowers students to
assess their areas of strength enabling them to choose the right
career.
Above all, the Program gives the students an opportunity to
interact with prominent Business Leaders. Herein, they would
be able to learn from these esteemed guests and understand
what separates the leaders from the rest of the pack. Through
the interactive sessions, students come to know the ups and
downs these leaders faced and how they handled critical

Summer Placements 2011
IIM Ranchi, the 8th in the IIM fraternity, received great industry encouragement in the first year of its establishment. Despite
facing hurdles like not having an established system in place, any alumni base and lack of awareness in industry, IIM Ranchi
succeeded in having a fully paid summer internship. The fact characterizes a proper placement process for getting internship
offers for all students of the batch.
A diverse range of profiles were offered that included Corporate Finance, Financial Consulting, Strategy, Media Marketing, Hospitality
Management, IT Consulting apart from the regular profiles such as Sales & Marketing, Corporate Banking, Operations and HR.
Considering IIM Ranchi had the highest percentile CAT cut-off last year, various companies agreed to offer niche profiles to the
students. The role of financial markets analyst by CNBC Group was offered solely at IIM Ranchi. A market leader in its segment
offered a strategy role at the Marketing Directors desk of the company. IIM Ranchi was the only IIM in the country to be offered
the coveted operati ons profi l e by Toyota. I I M Ranchi was among the few I I Ms to have i nterns worki ng at Noki a.

IIM-R ready to give shape to vision
AMIT GUPTA l January 2, 2011 Sunday
Ranchi, Jan. 1: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ranchi is ready
with a vision and strategic plan document for the next five years,
which envisages a number of region-specific ideas, to be implemented
in phases.
According to institute director M.J. Xavier, in the pipeline were plans
to open centres for business analytics, neuro-management (with a
tie up with Kanke-based Central Institute of Psychiatry), research
in Indian management, mining and manufacturing, inclusive growth
and regional development and e-governance.
Fields including health management, transportation management,
sports management, media management and sustainability and
green management woul d be i ncorporated i n due course.
For the centre for business analytics, IIM-R is in talks with Citibank
and IBM for support.
The institute will also introduce a postgraduate diploma course in
management (PGDM), equivalent to an MBA, for working professionals
from this year. The three-year course would be taught on weekends.
At present, IIM Ranchi offers a two-year full-time PGDM for which
aspirants are selected through the common admission test (CAT).
CAT scores will not be the criteria for a seat in the PGDM programme
for working professionals, and the institute is yet to decide the mode
of sel ect i ng candi dat es f or t he part -t i me programme.
The programme will be a great help for executives in companies
operating in the state, Xavier said.
Meanwhile, IIM-R, in consultation with its mentor IIM-Joka, has already
shortlisted names of about 40 aspirants who have applied for teaching
posts in the new management cradle.
We got responses from over 700 candidates. We have shortlisted
40 who would be called for interviews in the last week of January
and first week of February. We aim to finally recruit eight, said
Xavier, adding that the interviews would take place in Calcutta.
The first batch of 44 IIM-R students is being taught by faculty from
IIM-Joka. But after the recruitment of quality teachers, there would
be less dependence on guest faculty.
IIM Ranchi in News
In coming years, IIM-R also aims to start courses in PGDM in business
analytics, fellow programme in management, faculty development
programme for other management institutes and in-company
programmes on management, among others.
Paid internship for all 1st year students of IIM Ranchi
TNN | Mar 12, 2011, 11.20 PM IST
RANCHI : Confidence of the first-year students of Indian Institute of
Management (IIM) here has got boosted with all of them bagging
fully paid summer internship from reputed companies that include
two foreign placements.
A total of 51 offers were made by 24 companies from different
sectors for 44 students in the first-year batch. Two students bagged
placements for international internship in Singapore and Malaysia
with a stipend of Rs 1.6 lakh for two months.
Summer internship is important for the students because in most
cases it translates into final job offer. Since big multi-national companies
offer placements for summer internship, students can get a feel of
the practical work, build up contacts and expect final placements
with better packages in future. Student convener of IIM Ranchi Ajay
Patel said a diverse range of profiles had been offered to the students
in this year's internship placements. "Apart from the regular profiles
such as sales and marketing, corporate banking, operations and
human resource, the students have got opportunity in other sectors
also," added Patel.
Students have got placements in financial consulting, strategy,
hospitality management, IT consulting, statistics and economic research,
said he.
According to Patel, sales and marketing was the most preferred
area on campus with 31.82 per cent offers, while finance roles were
second with 29.54 per cent offers. Offers from operations and
consulting were around 11.36 per cent and 13.64 per cent, respectively.
"A multi-national market research company offered international
summer internships to two students in Singapore and Malaysia. The
highest stipend offered was Rs 1.6 lakh. The average stipend offered
to the batch of 44 students was close to Rs 55,000 for two months,"
said Patel.

Management education world over is in a crisis mode. People blame
the recent global financial crisis to the short sighted approaches of
the management graduates trained in western management concepts.
West is looking to the east for new directions. That is where we
want to do basic research and attain thought leadership through
erudite fusion of eastern and the western models. The center for
research in Indian Management at IIM Ranchi will play a pivotal role
in making IIM Ranchi a world renowned center for new insights in
management.
We also would like to reach out to the smaller B-schools and
contribute to the holistic development of the society and the environment.
Q. IIM Ranchi came into existence in 2010. What key challenges/hurdles
have you faced since the inception?
A. IIM Ranchi got a head-start compared to other new IIMs, since
it was mentored by IIM Calcutta (IIMC). Even before I was appointed
as the Director in November 2010, the first batch of 46 students
with an average CAT score higher than leading IIMs were attending
classes taught by IIM Calcutta faculty. Everything was given to me
in a platter.
The downside is that the IIMC culture (excessive analytic orientation)
has got ingrained to some extent. It is not that the same is bad,
excepting that we do not want to be seen as a division of IIMC. The
challenge initially was to get the students buy-in to the vision I have
set forth for the Institute. We have now introduced courses/modules
on Indian culture, inner development, rural immersion, and business-
government-and-society.
We do not want to set benchmarks for IIM Ranchi based on other
Institutes. Our vision is to set standards for others to follow. I do have
a challenging task ahead in terms of getting the right team of faculty,
staff and students who can make it happen.
Q. IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, and IIM Raipur the three Rs -- conducted
the first Common Admission Process for the admission of 2011 batch.
What have been the learnings from the joint admissions process?
Was it a success?
A. We also had IIM Tiruchirapalli included in the common admission
process. This was greatly appreciated by the students and parents.
We four Directors have become close friends. We have saved
money. The entire process was coordinated by Prof. Rameshan,
Director, IIM Rohtak. He single handedly managed the entire process
smoothly. We have learnt a lot from his meticulous planning. Next
year, IIM Ranchi would coordinate the entire admissions and we plan
to have common criteria across the four IIMs and also plan to have
counseling sessions for coordinating admissions to the four IIMs.
Mr. R C Bhargava has always been in favor of sharing resources
across IIMs. MHRD has been very supportive of collaboration across
IIMs. We recently had a meeting of the Directors and Chairpersons
of six new IIMs (the other two being IIM Udaipur and IIM Kashipur)
to work out strategies to share resources and chalk out growth
strategies. It is most likely that we will have six new IIMs doing joint
admissions next year.
Q. What advantages are there for the students studying at IIM Ranchi
when compared with already established IIMs like IIM-B, IIM-C?
A. We want to create new standards to measure the success of
any B-school. We want to produce management graduates who
are thinkers, philosophers, and team-players. Only such people can
look at issues from a holistic and long-term perspective and take
decisions that take care of multiple stake-holders. The education that
we impart in IIM Ranchi is such that it will propel them to leadership
positions in business and society. IITs and IIMs have produced many
successful business leaders but not necessarily well respected by
the society. Our students stand to gain from our holistic education
and preparation for life rather business alone.
Q. IIM Ranchi has finally been allotted land for permanent campus
recentl y. What wi l l be the uni que aspects of the campus?
A. We plan to grow vertically and also have centrally air-conditioned
classes and hostels. That way the initial 10 lakh square feet of
construction will not take up more than 30 acres, leaving the remaining
70% of land for future growth. Needless to say, it will be a green
building, preferably, platinum rated.
Half the class-rooms will be lecture theaters and the rest will be
designed for experiential (activity-based) learning. There will also be
a prayer hall for meditation.
Q. How do you rate the placements for your first batch students
who have passed out this year?
A. The first batch is currently in summer internship. Our students
have got placement in top ranking companies for their summer
internship. The average pays for the eight week period of Rs. 55,000
is comparable to the best in the country; the minimum being Rs.
15,000.
We have got good stipend for all the students in high profile companies.
This was mainly possible because we have high quality students
with high CAT scores. We also managed a piggy ride on IIMC and
also used my contacts in the Industry. We hope to get a number
of pre-placement offers. From the initial reports I have received from
the compani es, our students are doi ng exceedi ngl y wel l .
The next batch of 70 students should have no difficulty in getting
paid- summer-internship for all and we will get excellent final placements
for all the 46 first batch students. It is not the money that matters,
but the impact that our students make as change agents who not
only take care of the business but also the society and the environment.
Q. What plans do you have for IIM Ranchi for the academic year
2012?
A. We would like to give equal emphasis for knowledge creation as
well as knowledge dissemination. We want to conduct research on
business analytics, neuro-management and Indian management and
organize international conferences on these areas during 2012.
As regards new courses, we plan to launch a part-time executive
PGDM which will be taught during weekends. We also plan to mentor
second level B-schools in Jharkhand and improve their quality of
education.

Culture
Being a young Institute, much effort goes into setting up of different
processes that are already present in established B Schools. Various
student-run Clubs and Committees on campus have taken complete
ownership for handling all such activities. An example of this is the
Web & Literary Committee that was responsible for getting the official
website ready right from the design to final implementation and
regular updating. This student involvement in important B School
activities, inculcates managerial skills like team work, leadership, time
management and creativity. Even more, the students had a say in
deciding the college logo as well as working on different merchandising
products for the college.
Course Curriculum
The course curriculum of IIM Ranchi has been designed and improvised
by faculty members from IIM Calcutta. With a clear emphasis to all
round development, various new compulsory courses have been
introduced for first time in the country. IIM Ranchi is the only B School
in the country to offer the Capston Business Simulation Course for
its flagship PGP curriculum. This course is known world over as the
best way to teach Strategy, Cross Functional Alignment and Selection
of Tactics to build a successful company. Most other B schools
r est r i ct t hi s cour se onl y f or execut i ve pr ogr ammes.
Faculty
In an attempt to ensure that even in the formative years, the students
are taught by world class faculty members, IIM Ranchi has received
great support from IIM Calcutta and XLRI Jamshedpur. IIM Ranchi
functions primarily on a visiting faculty model. Around 90 percent of
the visiting faculty are from these established B Schools. Apart from
this, six permanent faculty members have joined the Institute from
different B Schools like National University, Singapore, IIM Indore and
MDI Gurgaon.
Intake
IIM Ranchi happens to have the highest CAT cut-off ever for any
IIMs in India. A small batch size has been maintained to ensure a
highly competent batch. Even more, the call to convert ratio for IIM
Ranchi was 1:20 which was by far the best among all IIMs.
Why IIM Ranchi
Corporate Relationships
IIM Ranchi received great Industry support during the first Summer
Internship process. With selective recruiters like Nokia and Dabur
showing faith in the students, the process was a resounding success.
With just one month after their summer internships, 6 students from
the first batch have already received PPOs / PPIs from various
reputed organizations. Additionally, within just one year, corporate
representatives from companies like HSBC, JP Morgan, Deutsche
Bank, ICICI Securities, Copal Partners, Dabur, The Nielsen Company,
PWC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Edelweiss, Coca Cola, Diageo, Britannia,
Dr Reddys, Pepsico, Ernst n Young, SocieteGenerale, Deloitte and
many others have visited the campus for various talks and events.
