C. Nouns D 7ases
Nouns in Norwegian &Bo%m@l' ha$e two genders, masculine and neuter, which ad;ecti$es
must agree with when modi.ying nouns. Technically there is a third gender, .eminine
&which Nynors% retains', but since .eminine nouns can be written as masculine nouns, -(m
including .eminine nouns in the masculine category. There are two inde.inite articles that
corres4ond with these genders: en .or masculine nouns and et .or neuter nouns. -n the
$ocabulary lists, a noun .ollowed by &n' means that it is a neuter noun and it ta%es the
inde.inite article et. The ma;ority o. nouns in Norwegian are masculine, so they ta%e the
inde.inite article en.
The only case o. nouns that is used in Norwegian is the geniti$e &showing 4ossession',
and it is easily .ormed by adding an :s to the noun. This is com4arable to adding :(s in
#nglish to show 4ossession. !owe$er, i. the noun already ends in :s, then you add
nothing &unli%e #nglish where we add :( or :(s'. ;lavs hus E Fla$(s house
G. Brticles D Demonstrati$es
There are two inde.inite articles &corres4onding to a and an': en and et. #n is used with
most o. the nouns &words denoting 4eo4le almost always use en', but you will ;ust ha$e
to learn which article goes with which noun. The de.inite article &the' is not a se4arate
word li%e in most other languages. -t is sim4ly a .orm o. the inde.inite article attached to
the end of the noun! Note that en words ending in a $owel retain that $owel and add an
:n instead o. adding :en. Bnd et words ending in :e ;ust add :t. Furthermore, the t o. et as
an inde.inite article is 4ronounced9 howe$er, the t is silent in the de.inite article :et
attached to the noun. &For .eminine nouns, the inde.inite article is ei and the de.inite
article that is attached to the noun is <a. -n theory, this gender does still e/ist in Bo%m@l,
but in 4ractice, it is rarely used and the .eminine nouns are in.lected li%e masculine
nouns, i.e. add :en instead o. :a .or the de.inite .orm.'
