composition and density. The forests are of varying types greatly differing in nature,
inter-mixed and interrupted by superior of inferior types. These show, much
diversity in representation and combination of the main species. The forests can be
broadly classified as follows:

forests and hilly savannahs.

2. The South-Indian dry ever-green miscellaneous forests.

3. The SouthIndian dry deciduous, which includes mixed forests and
thorn forests.

FAUNA

In the past, the district must have been the resort of several wild animals.
Human habitation and the indiscriminate destruction of forests resulted in the
disappearance of many species. Among the carnivores the tiger is almost extinct,
but leopard, hyena and wolf are occasionally seen in the forests. The Herbivorous
class is represented by the sambar and spotted deer or chital, while wild goat, and
wild bears are the other common ones. The black buck, the blue bull and the bison
are conspicuously absent in these parts. Among the birds, the Peafowl, peacock,
jungle fowl, pigeon, parrot, myna partidges, ghoose, doves etc. are common.

Scope for resource and demand based industries:

Basically, the District was predominantly classified as agrarian potential.
There is good scope for establishment of various industries both resource and
demand based. The prospects for setting up of the industries based on Agriculture,
Horticulture and Forest produce products can also be envisaged. Since the District is
in the nature of Agrarian economy, there is ample scope for establishment of Rice
Mills, Straw Board, Jute based products, coconut and cashew processing units etc.
13
Added to this there is scope for coming up, Mineral based products, such as Granite
Polishing and cutting units, stone crushing units, Chemical, Marine, Salt based units
etc.

Agriculture:

There is an average yield of paddy about 5.00 lakh tones per annum and 800
trading Rice Mills are existing apart from servicing of Rice Mills in rural areas. Hence
there is scope for more than 500 Rice Mills in addition to Solvent Extraction Plants,
Jute (Mesta) and Sugarcane are the major crops in the District. The Jute is being
grown in 20 mandals in this District. Basing on jute (mesta), 11 units are in
existence. There is further scope of setting up of 10 more Jute Twine Mills and other
jute based units and jute diversified products such as particleboards, laminated jute
boards Jute shopping bags etc.

Irrigation - Rivers (Nagavali & Vamsadhara):

Vamsadhara Left Canal _ 1,38,000 Acres
Vamsadhara _ Right canal _ 37,000 Acres
Nagavali _ _ 39,000 Acres
Mahendra Thanaya _ 5,000 Acres
Madduvalasa Project _ 25,000 Acres

Sugarcane:

In this district, 10,500 Ha. Sugarcane crop is grown giving a yield of 6,50,000
MT. Already two sugar factories with a crushing capacity of 4200 tons are existing -
-one at Sankili, R.Amadalavalasa (M) and Amadalavalasa. Hence there is scope for
setting up of one more Sugar Factory basing on the availability of Sugarcane.

Horticulture:

Under this sector Coconut, Cashew, Mango Pineapple, Mango, Banana are
being cultivated in the following extents (approx.)

1. Coconut : 10,000 Ha

4. Pineapple : 600 Ha
5. Vegetables : 4,000 Ha
6. Banana : 1,200 Ha

In addition to the 15 Coir based existing units, there is good scope for 5 more
units such as Curled coir rope, mats, mattresses as there is lot of demand.
14

Under cashew, more than 100 cashew-processing units are in existence and
there is scope for another 50 units on similar activities besides Cashew apple fenny,
Cashew shell oil can be developed. Further basing on Mango & Pineapple fruits, pulp
and fruit canning units can be encouraged. In addition to the above, there is wide
scope for setting up of a cold storage units, as there is only one unit exists in the
district.

Minerals:

This district is very rich in Granite and Beach sand mining (Ilamanite, Silica
etc.). About 200 granite quarries are working duly obtaining Quarry licenses. Most
of the granite raw blocks are being transported and exported. Only 6 Granite cutting
& polishing units are working. As there is good scope for Granite Cutting & Polishing
units, it is contemplated to set up an estate exclusively for granite-based industries
to a tune of 50 units at Tekkali and its surroundings.

Salt:

The District has193 KMs of long coastal line. Salt is cultivated in 5 Mandals --
S.Bommali, Tekkali, V.Kotturu, Nandigam & Gara -- yielding about 51,000 MTs of
raw salt in Ac.5000. So there is scope for setting up of 10-15 iodized salt & Salt
Grinding units in these Mandals
