Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10
into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using
objects or drawings, and record each
decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g.,

Commutative Property
If we change the order of the numbers we add,
we still get the same answer

Commutative Property- Abstract
We can switch the order of the numbers in a
problem, but we will always get the same
answer when we add.

What are two number combinations
you could add together to make the
number 6?

Review Question 3
What combination of numbers can
you put together to make the number
5?
4+1
5+1
Question 1 Answer
There are 3 completely different combinations,
and commutative property combinations:
Different: 1+5, 2+4, 3+3
Commutative: 5+1, 4+2, 3+3(different set of 3
first)

Question 1 Wrong Answer
5+2 is actually 7, if it said 5+1, the answer
would have been correct.
3+4 is also 7. If it said 3+3, the answer would
have been correct.

Question 2 Wrong Answer
This PowerPoint did not talk about the
associative property. This property has to do
with the way numbers in a problem are
grouped.
Question 2 Answer
The Commutative Property!
This law of mathematics allows you to
rearrange the numbers you are adding,
producing the same answer.
Question 3 Answer
Just like the number 6, the commutative
property applies here too.
1+4, 4+1
2+3, 3+2
Question 3 Wrong Answer
5+1 makes 6. This answer was only correct
when we were talking about the number 6, to
make the number five we would say 4+1.
