INDUSTRY PROFILE
Cosmetics are products that are created for application on the body for
the purpose of cleansing, beautifying or altering appearance and
enhancing attractive features. But cosmetics are not the same thing as
medicines and cosmetics cannot be used to alter a bodys functions or
performance.
With growing ecological and health awareness, modern cosmetics are
available in the form of organic cosmetics, mineral cosmetics and even
environmentally friendly cosmetics to cater to an overwhelming demand
for such products. The Indian cosmetic industry includes a long list of
cosmetic product buyers, importers, wholesalers, distributors and
manufacturers.
HISTORY OF COSMETICS
In other cultures like that of China, fingernail painting was popular in
ancient times. Ancient Chinese people used a mixture of gum arabic, egg
whites, gelatin and beeswax to make the first forms of nail varnish and
royalty preferred to use metallic or bright colors of nail varnish at that
time. People from lower ranks were restricted to the use of paler nail
varnish colors, and this trend of discrimination using nail varnish was also
visible in ancient Egypt.
Although cosmetic products have undergone many changes in modern
times, the basic concept of using cosmetics to enhance the features of good
health has not changed. For instance, blush-on is used to conceal pale
present a picture of rosy cheeks as opposed to pale skin and nail polish can
be used to conceal brittle or dry nails. The history of makeup cosmetics
however is tarnished by the ill-effects that were often experienced after
applying many ancient make-up products.
The history of cosmetics in the 1930s and 1940s shows how the fashion
or trend with respect to lipstick colors was changed annually, getting
darker and closer to red every passing year. It was around this time that
eyebrow shaping also became popular.
The history of the cosmetics industry includes very dark chapters in
European and Western countries from about six centuries back. Mixtures
and pastes were then used to whiten the face, a practice which remained
popular till over four hundred years later.
Up to the late nineteenth century, women in Western countries may have
secretly worn make-up made from mixtures of household products, as
make-up was then deemed the domain of film stars. Cosmetics were only
openly put up for sale in the early part of the twentieth century for the
first time. Tanned or darker skin tones became popular only as late as the
early twentieth century. It was in this era that tanning the skin became a
popular fad.
COMPANY PROFILE
David H. McConnell
Avon Founder David H. McConnell offered women a
rarity in 19th century America: a chance at financial
independence. In 1886, it was practically unheard of
for a woman to run her own business. Only about 5
million women in the United States were working
outside the home, let alone climbing the ranks of any
corporate ladder. That number accounted for just 20%
of all women.
For many women, McConnell would radically alter that scenario. The
man behind the company for women was the son of Irish immigrants and
grew up on a farm. Yet, it was this young man from rural New York, a
visionary leader decades ahead of his time, who would become a pioneer
in empowering women. McConnell, a bookseller-turned-perfume
entrepreneur, would offer women the opportunity to create and manage
their own businesses through what later became known as direct selling.
POWER OF THE PRODUCT & PEOPLE
To McConnell, the product and the people were everything to the
company, and he dedicated himself to ensuring that both would be
successful. In addition to inspiring the Representatives, McConnell also
wanted to encourage the company's employees with the same positive
spirit. A century before it would become de rigueur for companies to
institute employee incentive programs and hire hordes of consultants to
make sure employees were happy, motivated and productive, McConnell
knew just how to rally the troops. The motivational leader created a set
of guiding principles that are still the heart and spirit of Avon today. They
include:
Providing an earnings opportunity so individuals can achieve financial
independence and enjoy all that comes with such an accomplishment.
Recognizing everyone's unique contributions.
Giving back to the communities Avon serves.
Offering the highest-quality products with a guarantee of satisfaction.
Maintaining and cherishing the "friendly spirit of Avon."
McConnell believed strongly in the potential of people, and that in that
potential lay the power of possibility and, eventually, success:
If we stop and look over the past and then into the future, we can see
that the possibilities are growing greater and greater every day; that we
have scarcely begun to reach the proper results from the field we have
before us.
