7 PIPING SPECIAL ITEMS
Piping special items, referenced on PIDs, are not covered by this specification. Reference shall be made to
Piping Special Items List (Ref [1]).
8 GENERAL NOTES
8.1 Units
All units are expressed in the international SI system, except for nominal bore sizes of pipes, which are in
inches. Pressures are gauge pressures (in barg), unless otherwise stated. Temperatures are in degrees
Celsius.
Pressure/Temperature ratings of flanges are based on the latest version of the ASME B 16.5 & ASME
B16.47.
8.2 Design limits and pipe wall thickness
8.2.1 Design Limits
Pipe wall thickness values that are specified in this document are adequate for the full range of
pressure/temperature combinations tabulated.

8.2.2 Pipe wall thickness calculation principle
The calculation of pipe wall thickness values are in accordance with the ASME B 31.3 design code, and
include a corrosion allowance as well as mill tolerances as applicable. The weld efficiency coefficient of
welded pipes is equal to 1 (i.e. full radiography).

8.2.2.1 Corrosion allowance
All carbon steel and low alloy steel materials incorporate a minimum corrosion allowance of 1.27 mm.
Stainless steels, copper nickels, galvanised carbon steels, glass reinforced materials and other corrosion
resistant materials are used without extra-thickness for corrosion allowance.
8.2.2.2 Mill tolerance
The mill tolerance on wall thickness is as follows:
Minus 8 % for diameters 18 and above
Minus 12 % for diameters up to 16".

These rules take into account the fabrication tolerances applicable to fittings.

004_Rev06 - Piping Material Classes.DOC
8.2.2.3 Retirement thickness
The minimum wall thickness after reduction by:
Corrosion Allowance
Mill Tolerance
Threading Allowance, where applicable, in accordance with ASME B 1.20.1.
Is not less than the following:

Nominal Pipe Size
(NPS)
Minimum corroded thickness
(retirement thickness)
" to " 1.0 mm
1" to 8" 1.5 mm
10" 2.3 mm
12" to 14" 2.8 mm
16" to 24" 3.1 mm

Additionally, schedule "5 S" is not used for stainless steels, and schedule 80 is selected as a minimum for
pipes 1 in diameter and below.

If the wall thickness required to contain the pressure is less than the "Minimum Corroded Thickness", the
"Minimum Corroded Thickness" is used for pipe wall thickness selection purpose.

8.3 Pipe diameters
No pipe diameter smaller than " are used, except for instruments.

Pipe diameters of 1, 2, 3, 5", 7", 9" and 22" are not used. Equipment supplied with connections of
these sizes shall be adjusted to a standard size immediately adjacent to the equipment connection by means
of a suitable reducing fitting. Bushings shall not be used.

8.4 Threaded joints
8.4.1 Threads standards
All threaded connections shall have taper threads in accordance with ASME B 1.20.1 (NPT) (formerly
ASME B 2.1).

8.4.2 Threaded connections limitations
Threaded joints are not used on thermal oil system.

8.5 Jointing of small bore pipes
With the exception of thermal oil systems which are joined together by butt welding, small bore piping (3/4
and smaller) shall be joined together by threaded connections.

8.6 Bends and elbows in small bore piping
In small bore welded piping (1 and smaller), hot or cold-formed bends with a radius of 5D min. may be
used in lieu of elbows if and where authorised in the relevant piping material class.

8.7 Valves
All valves shall comply with this specification and requirements of Valves Specification (Ref [2]).
All fluids are considered without particles for valves design.

8.8 Branch reinforcement table
Refer to Section 10.

8.9 Glass reinforced epoxy materials (GRP)
GRP materials classes B90 (Wet Fire Network) shall be developed at next step of the project based on
selected GRP joining system and Supplier Standard.

8.10 High Density Poliethylene materials (HDPE)
HDPE material class B91 (Potable Water & Sewage), B93 (Hazardous, non-Hazardous Open Drain &
Sewage) and B98 (non-Hazardous Open Drain) pipe and fittings shall be joined by thermal butt fusion
method as recommended by the pipe manufacturer.

8.11 Piping Standards
Reference shall be made to Piping Standards (Ref [3]) for connections of instruments to the piping.
