'o egin this lesson I will have my students sitting *uietly on their ottoms on their
assigned s*uare on the rug! 3efore I introduce today4s lesson I will ma(e sure
everyone has their listening ears turned on! 'oday we are going to e reading the
oo( If You Give a Mouse a Cookie y Laura 1offe %umeroff! I will as( the students
5ow many of you li(e coo(ies6 2hat is your favorite (ind of coo(ie6 I will give
them a chance to turn to their neighors and share and then share with the class! I will
then e+plain to my students that I want them to ma(e a prediction! & prediction is
ma(ing a guess aout what is going to happen in the story! 3y raising your hand can
anyody tell me what he or she thin(s this oo( is aout6 I will give students the
opportunities to share their ideas with a neighor and then the class!
3efore I egin reading the oo( I will e+plain to the students that it is very important
they pay attention to the order and details during the story ecause we are going to
complete an activity afterwards! I have a picture of each event from the story and I
will have the class put the events ac( in se*uence order! 'he oo( I will e reading
to the students today is If You Give a Mouse a Cookie y Laura 1offe %umeroff!
2hile I am reading I have engaging *uestions to as( the students to (eep their
attention during the story!
Explore:
&fter we have read the oo( I will as( the class if they were paying attention to the
se*uence of events6 I hope they were ecause we will e ta(ing a picture of each
event and put the story ac( in order! I will as( the students to move into their math
circle around the rug so that everyone has a clear view of the pictures! &s a class we
will discuss the events that happened during the oo( and put them ac( in order
together as a class!
&fter we have put the story ac( together on the carpet I will introduce the activity
they will e completing y themselves! I will complete the entire activity for them
first so they will (now what to do when they return to their tales to complete it! I
will get my crayons) glue) and scissors together to start my activity! $ach student will
e given two wor(sheets! 'he first sheet has thirteen s*uares to e cut out and each
s*uare is a symol of a picture of each event that occurred in the story! 'he students
will e re*uired to color and cut out each individual picture on the first sheet! &fter
all thirteen s*uares are colored and cut out they will glue the s*uares in se*uence
order to the second sheet! 'he second sheet each student will e given has fourteen
lan( s*uares on the page! 'he first s*uare is the title page and the last thirteen
s*uares are lan(! 'he s*uares are lan( so that the students can glue each picture
event in se*uence order!
&fter I have e+plained the activity to the students I will as( students to return to their
tales! I will call each tale y color to go get their crayons o+es and return to their
seats! &fter all the students have een seated I will pass out two wor(sheets per child!
I will give students time to complete the activity and afterwards the students will
return to their s*uares!
Explain:
&s each student finishes their wor( I will as( them to turn in their paper on the
roc(ing chair! 2hen each student finishes they are to return to the rug and sit in his or
her s*uare *uietly! I elieve this lesson was a eneficial way to wor( on
comprehension) se*uencing) and predicting! I hope the se*uence wor(sheet will e
eneficial in helping each student understand how to put events in se*uential order!
&fter everyone has finished I will as( each student to come up to the front of the class
and share their wor(sheet to retell their story! $veryone will e instructed to turn his
or her listening ears on and e respectful to their peers while they share their ideas!
&fter everyone has shared their papers I have a few *uestions to as( the class! I will
as( the class if they li(ed retelling the story as a group6 .id this activity help them
when creating their own wor(sheet6 .id they thin( this was an easy or hard tas(6
2hat words do we use when putting events in order6 I want to elaorate more on
other stories written y the same author so students can really ma(e a connection
etween this oo( and other oo(s that are similar! I have a few of Laura 1offe
%umeroff oo(s with me to introduce to the class! I am not going to read any of the
oo(s ecause of the time limit! I want to introduce students to other oo(s that are
similar to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie y Laura 1offe %umeroff! 5er oo(s are
great for teaching students how to put events in se*uential order!
&fter we have finished our discussion I will as( the students to return to their
assigned tale and clean up their area! If everyone ehaved well during my entire
lesson and cleaned up his or her area then I have a treat for everyone! I will give each
student who wants one a chocolate chip coo(ie li(e the coo(ie from the oo( If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie!
Elaboration:
If there is still time in my lesson then I am going to tal( aout the oo( If You Give a
Pig a Pancake y Laura 1offe %umeroff! I want to give everyone the opportunity to
ma(e predictions aout what this oo( is aout! $veryone will e given the
opportunity to share his or her ideas with their neighors and the class! I will then
read the oo( to the class! Laura 1offe %umeroff has many oo(s that are similar to If
You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Pig a Pancake my hope is y reading
these oo(s children will have a etter understanding of the concept covered today!
&lso) oth of these oo(s are a great way to test students4 comprehension!
Assessment:
My assessment for this lesson is the individual assignment I am having them
complete to turn into me! 3y retelling the story as group I was ale to see if each
student can demonstrate comprehension and se*uencing s(ills! 'he individual
assignment is set up to show me if each student can demonstrate how to se*uence
events! 3oth of these activities are designed to show me each my students4
capailities for the classroom o7ectives and &laama Course of Study standards!
Accommodations:
2hen the students are sent to their tales I will have a mi+ of students in each group!
I want elow grade level learners) at grade level learners) and aove grade level
learners to wor( together during this activity! For my elow grade level learners
having a well-rounded group of students at each tale this will help these students
who have a harder time completing assignments! For those students who are at or
aove grade level learners I would have had them write a two-three sentences
response predicting more events that could happen after the mouse wants a coo(ie on
the last page! I feel as though this response will give those that academically
advanced an e+tra push! I would not have my elow grade level learners complete
this assignment!
Reflection:
I did a lesson on comprehension using the oo( If You Give a Mouse a Cookie y
Laura 1offe %umeroff! &t first I was really worried aout this lesson ecause I chose to
complete a comprehension lesson and my (indergartner4s are new to completing
comprehension activities! My (ids did really well with the activity8 I only had two
students that had a hard time with the assignment! Since most of the students did so well I
was ale to wor( with the struggling students! My students made me feel at ease ecause
when we started the activity they were ale to retell the story to me pretty perfectly! 'hey
were ale to do this ecause the entire time I was reading the oo( they were having a
last predicting what might come ne+t in the story! I feel as though they did so well
ecause they were actually interested in the learning process! I was very impressed with
my class and their aility to complete this assignment!
I felt as though my lesson went very well ut there will always e something to
improve on! 'oday I needed to improve on my time management s(ills! 'he wor(sheet I
gave my children re*uired them to cut out thirteen individual pictures) glue them in the
correct o+) and color each picture! I proaly should have had the pictures precut and
agged! 'he lesson should have ta(en aout forty-five minutes and it ran a little over an
hour! It was not that the students could not do the activity they 7ust had troule with the
preparation! My students wor( really hard ut they are very slow wor(ers! I have a few
children who are perfectionists so cutting) gluing) and coloring is difficult for them! I
have two students imparticular that will have a melt down if they cut croo(ed or color
outside the lines!
If I were given the opportunity to re-teach this lesson I would have pre-agged the
pictures) I thin( it would have help with my time management s(ills! &lso) I thin( it
would have een a good idea to assign each child a picture of one of the events to hold
during the story! I would have a pre-made chart on the oard with the title of the oo( at
the top! &s I read the story whenever I came across an event whoever was holding that
particular picture could have ta(en up to the chart and tapped it to the paper! I thin( this
would have een a great way to reinforce the se*uence! &lso I would have left the chart
on the oard and that way everyone could have wor(ed at their own pace instead of
wor(ing as a group cutting) gluing) and then coloring!
In my lesson I feel as though my children learned how to se*uence events! My
students starting to ecome comfortale with individual assignments and had fun with my
activity today! 'hese students love to do anything that includes cutting) gluing) and
coloring ecause they feel li(e they are accomplishing some ig assignment! My students
surprised me today with how well they did with the activity! My cooperating teacher has
really stressed to them the importance of giving your est effort on every assignment) it
does not have to e perfect ut she has to e ale to see that each student did their est!
My students did their est today! I (now that my students learned something today
ecause they were ale to predict the upcoming te+t in the oo() se*uence the events
correctly) and retell the story to me after they finished their assignment! I was very proud
of my students today and most importantly I made it clear to them they should e proud
of themselves!
I feel very luc(y to have een given the opportunity to wor( with Mrs! 1ohnson!
Mrs! 1ohnson always helps me improve on my idea for each lesson! I have learned a lot
from wor(ing with her every wee(! She not only gives me feedac( efore the lesson ut
also after the lesson! $ach time I teach a lesson she is there to give me positive feedac(
and gives me ideas for what I could do if I ever teach this lesson again or one similar!
Mrs! 1ohnson is a wonderful and truly cares aout my clinical e+periences! I feel very
lessed to have a teacher who truly cares aout my education and wants me to have the
est e+perience possile! I hope that one day I am as a great a teacher as Mrs! 1ohnson!
