Hawker Siddeley Vampire T.SS (One
3,5001b Rolls-Royce Goblin 35 turbojet).
Of the 804 Vampire Trainers built in the
UK, 50 in India and 109 in Australia,
many are still in service in about 20
countries. Span, 38ft; length, 34ft 5m: max
gross, 12,9201b ; max speed, 467kt.
Hawker Siddeley Venom The Swiss Air
Force still operates 13 squadrons of fighter-
bomber Venoms and is finding difficulty in
choosing a cost-effective replacement.
Hawker Siddeley Vulcan B.2 (Four
20,0001b Rolls-Royce Olympus BOl.21 Mk
301 turbojets). About nine Strike Command
squadrons are currently operating Vulcans
with the Blue Steel nuclear deterrent, or
as hi-lo-hi tactical bombers. Some 50 of
these will remain in service until about 1975.

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer Srs.2 (Two
640 h.p. Alvis Leonides 531/88 radial
engines). These STOL light transports are
still used in limited numbers by the RAF,
which had 36, and the Royal Malaysian Air
Force (14); three more went to Nepal. The
RAF's "Twin-Pins" are due for early phase-
out. Span, 76ft 6in; length, 45ft 3in; max
gross, 14,6001b; max cruise, 137kt; max
range, 500 n.m.
Short Belfast C.l (Four 5,730 e.h.p. Rolls-
Royce Tyne RTy.12 turboprops). Ten of
these large freighters of 53 Sqn at Brize
Norton form the basis of the RAF heavy-
equipment lift facility. Span, 158ft lOin;
length, 136ft 5in; max payload, 78,0001b;
max gross, 230,0001b; max cruise, 305kt;
range, with max payload, 810 n.m., with
max fuel, 4,600 nj n.
Short SC.7 Srs. 3M Sky van (Two 715
s.h.p. Garrett TPE-331-201 turboprops).
First military order for the Skyvan "box-
car" utility transport came from the
Austrian Air Force. This was followed by
one from the Muscat & Oman Air Force
this May. Span, 64ft l l i n; length, 40ft l i n;
max payload, 5,0001b; max gross, 13,5001b;
max cruise, at 10,000ft, 175kt; range, with
5,0001bi payload, 205 n.m.; max range, with
3,7801b payload, 580 n.m.
Wesrland (Fairey) Gannet AEW.3 (One
3,873 s.h.p. Rolls-Royce Double Mamba 102
turboprop). No 849 Sqn RN at Brawdy
has flight detachments of three Gannet
AEW.3s, one T.5 trainer and one AS.4
carrier-on-delivery transport on each of the
three attack carriers in service. Span,
54ft 4in; length, 44ft; max gross, 25,0001b
approx; max speed, 217kt approx; endur-
ance, 4hr-5hr.
I NDI A
HAL HT-2 (One 155 h.p. Cirrus Major
III). A few of the 170 HT-2s built up to
1964 still operate with IAF auxiliary
squadrons for primary training. Span, 35ft
2in; length, 24ft 9in; max gross, 2,2401b;
max speed, 113kt.
HAL HF-24 Marut Mk 1A (Two 4,8501b
HAL/RoUVRoyce Orpheus BOr.3 Mk 703
turbojets, which develop nearly 6,0001b with
afterburning). Hindustan Aeronautics is
building 60 HF-24 Mk Is without reheat
and 20 Mk lAs with 20 per cent thrust
boost from HAL afterburner system. Other
versions: projected Mk IB tandem trainer.
and Mach 2 HF-24 Mk 2 with Egyptian
Brandner E-300 turbojets. A two-seat
trainer version has flown. Span, 29ft 6in;
length, 52ft; max gross, 19,7351b (clean):
max speed, Mach 1.02.
HAL Aeronautics HJT-16 Mk II Kiran
(One 2,5001b Rolls-Royce Viper 11 turbo-
jet). Orders for 24 pre-production and 36
production models of this side-by-side seat-
ing, low-wing basic trainer have been placed
for the IAF, with further orders expected.

HAL (Hawker Siddeley) Gnat F.l (One
4,7001b HAL/Rolls-Royce Orpheus BOr.l
Mk 701 turbojet). Following its success in
the 1965 Indo-Pakistan conflict, India has
revived production for some 200 Gnats. A
few are still in service in Finland. Span,
22ft 2in; length, 29ft 9in; max gross,
8,8851b; max speed, Mach 1.15; tactical
radius, external fuel, 535 n.m.; service
ceiling, 50,000ft.
ITALY
Aerfer-Aermacchi AM.3 (One 340 h.p.
Continental GTSIO-520-C engine). Two pro-
totypes of this three-seat STOL liaison type
have been built for an Italian Army require-
ment for 100. Span. 38ft 6in; length, 28ft
8in; max gross, 3,7501b; max speed, at sea
level, 135kt, at 16,000ft, 165kt; max range,
at 10,000ft, 460 n.m.; max endurance, at
sea level, 4hr 45min.
Aermacchi MB.326G (One 3,4101b Rolls-
Royce Viper 20F20 Mk 540 turbojet). Latest
dual-role version of this widely used basic
trainer, of which several hundred are in
service, the MB.326G has an up-rated Viper
and provision for 3,0001b of stores. Ex-
ported to Tunisia, Ghana, Argentina (navy),
Congo and built under licence in Australia
and South Africa. Span, 35ft 7in; length,
34ft l l i n; max gross, 11,5001b; max speed,
468kt; max range, 1,320 n.m.
Fiat G.91R.3 (One 5,0001b Rolls-Royce
Orpheus 80302 turbojet). This light fighter-
bomber serves with three countries. Italy
has 100 G.91R.ls, lAs and IBs; Germany
took 74 R.3s from Fiat, plus 50 R.4s
diverted from Greece and Turkey under
MAP, and added 270 R.3s from licensed
production. Forty R.4s subsequently trans-
ferred to Portugal. Span, 28ft l i n; length,
33ft 9in; max gross, 12,125lb; max speed,
Mach 0.9; tactical radius (clean), 175 n.m.:
ferry range, 1,000 n.m.
Fiat G.91T/1 and T/3 (One 5,0001b Fiat/
R-R Orpheus 803 turbojets). Production of
this advanced trainer comprised 74 T/ls for
Italy and 44 T/3s for Germany. Span, 28ft
3in; length, 38ft 4in; max gross, 13,3401b;
max speed, Mach 0.92.
Fiat G.91Y (Two 2,7201b General Electric
J85-13A turbojets developing 4,0801b with
Hindustan HJT-16 Kiran in production for
the Indian Air Force
afterburning). Twin-engine light strike fighter
development of G.91, 20 pre-production and
initial production batch of 35 being built
for Aeronautica Militare. Span, 29ft 7in;
length, 38ft 4in; max gross, 19,1801b; max
speed, 30,00Oft Mach 0.95, s.l. 600kt; tacti-
cal radius, s.l., 405 n.m; ferry range, 1,900
n.m.
Fiat G.222 (Two 3,400 sii.p. General
Electric T64-P-4C turboprops). First of two
prototypes of this V/STOL general-purpose
transport was rolled out last month. The
conventional version has only turboprop
power, with optional JATO, while the
tactical model would have extended nacelles
with four lift-jets each. An ASW version
has been designed. The cylindrical pres-
surised fuselage has a tail loading door and
can seat 44 pax. Span, 94ft 2in; length,
74ft 6in: max payload, 19,8401b; max gross,
58,4201b; max cruise, at 14,750ft, 216kt;
range, with 14,3301b payload, 1,077 n.m,
max fuel range, 2,690 n.m.
Piaggio P.149D (One 270 h.p. Lycoming
GO-480 engine). Main operator of this four-
seat primary trainer is Germany, which
bought 72 and built 190, and Nigeria (26
ex-Luftwaffe). Span, 36ft 6in; length, 28ft
lOin; max gross, 3,7041b; max speed, 167kt.
Piaggio P.166M (Two 380 h.p. Piaggio-
Lycoming IGSO-540-A1C piston engines).
Standard tactical transport for Aeronautica
Militare, where it is used for communica-
tions, ambulance and training. Production
of 51 for AM complete, nine delivered to
South African Air Force. Span, 46ft 9in;
length, 39ft 3in; gross weight, 8,3771b; max
speed, 214kt; max range, 1,300 n.m.
Piaggio-Douglas PD-808 (Two 3,3501b
Rolls-Royce Viper 526 turbojets). Twenty-
five PD-808 light jet transports are being
delivered to the Aeronautica Militare. Span,
43ft 4in; length, 42ft 2in; max gross,
18,0001b; max cruise, above 36,000ft, 432kt;
max range, 1,105 n.m.
JAPAN
Fuji KM-2 (One 340 h.p. Lycoming
IGSO-480 engine). Twenty-eight of these
two/four-seat developments of the Beech
T-34 are used by the Japanese MSDF. Span,
32ft lOin; length, 26ft; max gross, 3,8601b;
max cruise, at 10,000ft, 164kt; max range.

Fuji TIB (One 2,6451b Ishikawajima-
Harima J3-IHI-3 turbojet). Production of
42 Orpheus-powered T1A and 22 TIB jet
trainers was completed in 1963. Span, 34ft
