Lesson Plan
Making Deductions
Level: Intermediate to Advanced.
Time: 12 minutes.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to make deductions,
practise discourse and intonation.

Procedures
I. Presentation: (4 min)
- Set context: A man with a pack on his back entered a field , and died.
Ask students to discuss the possible answers and note down the language
they used while deciding on their answers by asking:
What might have happened to him?
What could have he done?....
Teacher writes any suitable suggestions on board, take the opportunity to
elicit or give the following language:
He might have been attacked by an animal.
He could have been attacked by an animal.
Perhaps he was attacked by an animal.
If he was attacked by an animal, he could have run away.
He can't have been attacked by an animal. That's too easy.
II.Practice:
- Demonstrate the model:
// He might have been //  attacked by an animal//
// He could have been //  attacked by an animal//
// Perhaps he was //  attacked by an animal//
// If he was attacked by an animal //  he could have run away//
//  He can't have been attacked by an animal //  That's too easy//
- Practise saying these sentences in chorus, then individuals.
- Ask students to do further practice by their own mysteries to be solved
by giving more deductions.
Eg: Yesterday, I went to Ha's house, the door was open but she was not in.
// She might have been //  out//
// She could have been //  OUT with someone //
// Perhaps she was//  AWAY//
//  She can't have been shopping //  That's too early//

- Ask students to write the utterance down, mark the stress syllables and tone
movements.
IV. Evaluation (1 min): - Give comments and remarks.
V. Extention: ( 1 min): - Ask students to practise writing the utterances, marking
the stress syllables and tones movements. Then practise saying them.
