A Day in School

Sandy: You look tired, Frank. Are you okay?


Frank: I’m fine, but school, but school is very busy. I have to study a lot and I
tirelessly read a lot of books in the library.
Sandy: You hardly study a lot.
Frank: That’s because I always want to do well in my classes, but I sometimes hang
out with my friends. I played soccer on the weekend too.
Sandy: How often do you hang out with friends? I mean, I ran into you and your
friends a few weeks ago, but I hardly see you? I never see you with a
textbook.
Sandy: I sometimes study but not so much. I’m a genius
Frank: Sure you are! Good luck on your test.

An Adverb is a part of speech that modifies a verb, an adjective and another


adverb.
Kinds of Adverbs:
1. Adverbs of Place – always talks about the location where the action of the verb is
being carried out.
-It answers the question Where?
-It can be directional.
For example: up, down, north, southeast, etc.
-It can refer distances.
For example: nearby, far, miles apart, etc.
Another examples:

everywhere behind inside
forward upward
I can see a lot of vendors everywhere.
Where are the vendors?
What word in the sentence that answers the question “where”?
Everywhere is an adverb of place that answers the question “where”

2. Adverbs of Time – tell us when an action happened, but also for how long, and
how often.
Examples:
For how long: all day, not long, for a while, since last year

Adverbs of time answers the question “When”?

Another Examples:

yesterday today tomorrow


last Monday in July in the morning

Yesterday morning, Maria and Jenny went to buy some things in the market.
When did Maria and Jenny go to buy something in the market?
Yesterday morning is an adverb of time that answers the question “when”.
3. Adverbs of Manner – tell how something is done.
- It answers the question “how”. Most adverbs of manner are formed from
adjectives by adding ly.

happy – happily easy - easily


slow - slowly harsh - harshly

The children go happily from house to house


How do the children go from house to house?
What word in the sentence answers the question “how”?
Happily, is an adverb of manner that answers the question how.

Kinds of Adverb:
1. Adverbs of Manner-tell how something is done.
- It answers the question “how”. Most adverbs of manner are formed from adjectives
by adding ly.

happy-happily easy-easily
slow-slowly harsh-harshly

Ex: The children happily go from house to house.

Ask: How do the children go from house to house?

Say: Happily is an adverb of manner that answers the question how.

(Teacher will opt to give more examples)

2. Adverbs of Frequency- describe how often an action happens.


There are six main adverb of frequency that we use in English:
Always, usually (or normally), often, sometimes, rarely and never.
Another examples: weekly, annually, daily, monthly, etc.
The most common position for adverbs of frequency is between the subject and the
verb.
Ex.: James and Stephen rarely go to the cinema in the summer because they prefer to
stay outside.
Ben and Emma sometimes go for lunch together
Ask: How often did James and Stephen go to the cinema in the summer because they
prefer to stay outside?
How often did Ben and Emma go for lunch/
What word in the sentence that answers the question how often?
Say: Rarely and sometimes are adverbs of frequency that answers the question how
often.
