EARLY DAYS OF BRIG MOHD USMAN, MVC(P)

Brig Mohd Usman was only 12 days short of his 36th birthday when he made the supreme sacrifice for the
Motherland. But in his short lifetime, he achieved much more than most mortals who have lived twice as
long.
Brig Mohd Usmans valour, courage, tenacity and leadership qualities against fearful odds played a crucial
role in 1948 when a newborn Nation faced its rst test in battle.
Brig Mohd Usman was born at Bibipur, Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh on 15 July, 1912. His father, Kazi
Mohammed Farook was a Police Ofcer and went on to become the Kotwal in Banaras (Varanasi).
Courage came naturally to Young Usman, when at the tender age of 12 he jumped into a well to save a
drowning child. Mohd Usman was educated at Harish Chandra High School in Varanasi . Despite the
extremely limited opportunities for Indians to get a Commission and the intense competition, he succeeded
in getting selected to the prestigious Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1932.
