Dr .Ratna Handurukande,

Peradeniya.
Dear Dr.Handurukande,
"Buddhist Tates from Sanskrit Sources"
Thank you for your letter of eu/,~ I sh'll -append
you "Note On the Suraws" at the end of the book. It will
be published later in the year, and, of course, copies
will be sent to you as soon as it is out.
Apart from minor adjustments, I have made the
following two changes, hoping for your consent:

For As fate would have it read As his Krma
Page 14, 2nd para, 1st line:

ForExceedingly agi tRted by his words, tr Ara hant

As these stlries are "retold" by you, I think that this
change is jstified. I th Sanskrit original has hre
"exceedingly agitated" (which certainly does not agee
with an arahant's psycholo), this would be another
illustration of a tendency of diluting and belittling the
image and ideal of the Arhant, noticeable, perhaps, already
in pre-Mahayana times (see,e.g.Kathavatthu, where the thesis
that an Arahant can fall back from his attainment, is
rejected).
Yours in the Dhamma,
