Comparative Study between Steel Structure and R.C.C Building for 4 storied building of
Area 310450 SFT

SL Item Steel Structure R.C.C Building
1 Area 310450 SFT 310450 SFT
1 Cost Approx 30%cost saving
Total Cost: Civil+Steel=USD 2964473
(BDT207513170)
Unit cost: Steel+Civil, USD9.67/SFT (BDT677.57).

Total cost:USD4989375
(BDT349256250)
Unit cost:USD16.07/SFT (BDT1125).
Civil work is more expensive than Steel
work because of Building weight. And also,
in R.C.C Building, building load and axial
load is higher than steel building.
2 Time Approx 60%less time required than R.C.C More time required & construction work is
very slow in Rainy season.

3 Building Self Weight 40%less than R.C.C if designed accurately.
4 Resell value Approx 80%resell value.
Since the beginning of 2004 the increase in global
demand for steel has led to significant price
increases for all steel products, reinforcement bar
as well as structural sections. The impact of these
increases on building costs is worth considering in
the context of the steel v concrete frame decision..
In the first half of 2004 steel section prices have
increased by around 35%, reinforcement bar price
increases have been 50%over the same period.
The net effect on frame and floor costs of these
raw material price rises would be an increase of
5 - 8/m
2
in the steel schemes and 3 - 6/m
2
in
the concrete schemes. The competitive situation is
therefore largely unchanged.

Negligible
5 Earth Quake
Resistance
Steel structure is more resistive for Earth Quake
than R.C.C because of lower self weight than
R.C.C

6 Flexibility &
Adaptability
Long spanning structural steelwork systems create
column free areas that offer greater flexibility of
floor layout and enhance the lettability of the
space. Light steel partition walls can be easily
relocated, leading to adaptable buildings with the
ability to meet future needs.

7 Sustainability Steel is 100% recyclable without any loss of
quality. Currently in the UK, when buildings using
structural steelwork frames come to the end of
their useful lives, 86%of the steel sections are
recycled to create more steel products and 13%
are reused in their existing form. The recycling
rates for reinforcement bar are negligible by
comparison
