Introduction

This introduction section includes brief introduction of the Asian Institute of Technology
(AIT) with its three schools and satellite centers, a chronology of tracer studies in AIT, and
tracer study of AIT graduates (2003 to mid 2008).
1.1 Asian Institute of Technology
As an autonomous, international, ostgraduate institution! AIT was established in "#$# to
hel meet the growing need for ad%anced education in Asia. Three schools and AIT
satellite centers ro%ide ad%anced education, training and research in the areas of
engineering! en%ironment and de%eloment! and management, to meet the needs of ri%ate
and ublic sectors. &or more than fi%e decades, AIT has been an acti%e artner in the
romotion of technological change and de%eloment in the Asia'(acific region. AIT today
has graduated more than "),000 graduates from more than 80 countries, and currently has
an enrollment of o%er ",800 full time students tutored by an international team of faculty
and staff drawn from all o%er the world. *nglish is the medium of instruction and written
wor+, as well as the official administrati%e language. The brief introduction of the three
schools and AIT satellite centers is resented hereunder.
1.1.1 School of Environment, Resources and Development
The ,chool of *n%ironment, -esources, and .e%eloment (,*-.) is committed to lay a
leadershi role in the ro%ision of e/cellent academic, research and outreach rogramme
that are rele%ant to the region. Through its academic rogrammes and outreach units,
,*-., AIT0s largest school, has been wor+ing towards caacity building and human
resources de%eloment in the areas of en%ironment and resources management, o%erty
alle%iation and socio'economic1gender de%eloment. The mission of ,*-. is to resond
to regional needs by mobili2ing and enhancing caacities for socially, economically and
en%ironmentally sound de%eloment in artnershi with the ublic and ri%ate sectors.
The school follows an interdiscilinary aroach that integrates the technological, natural
and social sciences. The academic rograms of ,*-. are designed to be resonsi%e to the
regional needs in (o%erty -eduction, *n%ironmental (rotection, and ,ustainable
.e%eloment. They are categori2ed into three academic thrusts, namely3 4ioresources,
*n%ironment, and *nergy and .e%eloment ,tudies. This school has the following fields
of study3

1.1.2 School of Engineering and Technology
,chool of *ngineering and Technology (,*T) is the synergistic integration in :o%ember
200$ of the two former ,chools, namely, the ,chool of <i%il *ngineering (,<*) and the
,chool of Ad%anced Technologies (,AT). =istorically, these two schools came into
e/istence only in >anuary "##3 when the Institute reorgani2ed the need to reform its
academic structure from smaller'si2ed units called ?.i%isions? to larger bodies named
?,chools?. The ,chool of <i%il *ngineering (,<*) reresented the legacy of AIT when it
was established with a single field of study in =ydraulics *ngineering. ,ubse5uently, other
ci%il engineering fields of study were launched to assist the reco%ery from the ra%ages of
the ,econd @orld @ar. ,<* emhasi2ed on a learning rocess that combines theoretical
roblem'sol%ing and real life alication of engineering rinciles. Its research orientation
was outward'loo+ing, addressing the actual and anticiated needs of the built en%ironment.
The ,chool of Ad%anced Technologies (,AT) had different fields of study that were
launched in resonse to the needs of the regional industriali2ation in the second and third
decades of AITAs e/istence. The ,chool was committed to being international,
multidiscilinary centers of e/cellence in Information, <ommunications, Industrial
,ystems, and ,ace Technologies through education, research and outreach.
,*T amalgamating ,<* and ,AT is stri%ing to create synergies between the acti%ities of
the two former schools to build u world'class multidiscilinary and cross'discilinary
education, research and outreach acti%ities across the boundaries of traditional fields of
+nowledge. 6ore interdiscilinary rograms are being launched so faculty members can
wor+ effecti%ely across the discilinary walls. The new school is enhancing its academic
ortfolio by emhatically inBecting the ?$I? features namely internationality, inno%ation,
integration, information technology and industrial artnershi. ,*T is comrised of the
three broad grous and se%eral fields of studies which are listed hereunder.
The <i%il and Infrastructure *ngineering grou includes the following field of studies3

1.1. School of !anagement
The ,chool of 6anagement (,C6) has academic rograms which are of international
standard and are adated to the needs and challenges of the economies in an increasingly
cometiti%e region. ,C6 offers 64A, (h., */ecuti%e 64A and .4A (rograms. All
academic rograms are conducted in *nglish. The 64A (rogram encourages articiati%e
learning and use a %ariety of interacti%e learning methodologies. (rograms are designed
for students to learn latest management concets, techni5ues and tools, but more
imortantly, to de%elo s+ills and attitude of listening and understanding others, holistic
thin+ing, collecti%e decision ma+ing, leading by e/amle, communicating, negotiating,
and being sensiti%e to societal concerns. ,C6 ro%ides e/cetional indi%iduals with a
suorti%e en%ironment in which they can de%elo their s+ills and atitudes, heling them
to reach their rofessional goals and to ser%e the interests of countries in the Asia'(acific
region. The curriculum is necessarily interdiscilinary, integrating as it consists elements
from engineering, economics, social sychology and management fields. It is structured in
such a way as to include the integrated comonents of the school re5uired courses,
electi%es or focus courses, and1or an 64A (roBect or -esearch ,tudy.
There are three distinct */ecuti%e 64A (rograms ' *64A in 4ang+o+, *64A ' =uman
-esources 6anagement (*64A'=-6) and International *64A (i*64A) in Dietnam.
The three *64A rograms ha%e different segmentation and cater to management conte/t
of each segment. All the *64A rograms are of e5ual %alue and 5uality aiming at
different target grous. ,C6 offers two distinct doctoral rograms ' (h. and .4A. The
(h. rogram focuses on research wor+ embedded in theories from social sciences and
humanities, and reares students for teaching and research'related Bobs. .4A is a
rofessional doctorate rogram, where the research is rooted in the conte/t of rofessional
ractice ma+ing a significant contribution to management ractice, olicy or strategy. The
two rograms ha%e different segmentation and cater to research conte/t of each segment.
4oth rograms are of e5ual %alue and 5uality aiming at different target grous. 4oth

It was in mid 200) when AIT <enter in Indonesia (AIT'<I) was established as a
collaborati%e institution for =uman -esource .e%eloment located in 4angdung,
Indonesia to facilitate and wor+ on research and de%eloment, consultancy, rofessional
trainings and higher education rogram according to Indonesian regulations.
AIT'<I was established based on collaboration between Asian Institute of Technology
(AIT) Thailand and The 9o%ernment of Indonesia (9CI) reresented by 6inistry of
(ublic @or+s (6(@) Indonesia. AIT'<I has clearly mentioned its %ision to be the best
education institution in ro%iding the best human resources in regional and international
le%el. AIT'<I has a mission which can be di%ided into the three short term obBecti%es,
namely, (") sreading out of science and technology which has been de%eloed by AIT to
suort de%eloment in Indonesia, esecially in the field of construction industries! (2)
increasing 5uality of human resources in Indonesia through rofessional trainings and
higher education rograms such as certificate and diloma rograms leading to masterAs
and doctoral rograms! and (3) Increasing regional artnershi and collaboration in the
field of science and technology, information management, research and de%eloment,
training and education. AIT'<I has already started the dual master degree rogram on
transortation engineering and management. This rogram is tailor made to meet the need
of caacity building for the .irectorate 9eneral of =ighway.
1.2 Trace Studies in AIT
The tracer study of AIT graduates has been one of the imortant research acti%ities in AIT.
The first tracer study was done in "#8". The eriodic tracing of AIT alumni focuses on
udating the alumni directory and gathering certain information re5uired for the
imro%ement of AIT curriculum, teaching, research, e/tension, and networ+ing. As of
>anuary, 200#, altogether "7 AIT Alumni tracer studies ha%e been conducted, including
this one, Tracer ,tudy of AIT 9raduates (2003 to mid 2008), which also includes Tracer

1. Tracer Study of AIT $raduates 2%%&
It has been found that alumni tracer studies are the most imortant %ehicle to build strong
bonds between the Alma Mater and the e%er'increasing graduates. This is feasible through
two ersecti%es. &rom one ersecti%e, the alumni are the rich source of feedbac+ for
imro%ements in the course curriculum, teaching, research, e/tension, and networ+ing. Cn
the other, the tracer study hels to measure the e/tent of rofessional and academic careers
ursued by the graduates after gaining +nowledge and s+ill through academic institutions
li+e Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). ,tarting from "#8" to date altogether "7 tracer
studies of AIT graduates ha%e been done in different formats and with different foci. The
latest tracer study was conducted in 200810# targeting recent ast graduates (200$ to mid
2008) with an additional searate reort for the AIT 9raduates with :orwegian
,cholarshi (200$ to mid 2008). This tracer study also emloyed both arametric and non'
arametric statistical tools in the data analysis and interretation. The total oulation for
this study was constituted by all the AIT graduates who graduated in between 2003 to mid
2008. They were 3##) including 27#" male AIT graduates and "$0$ female AIT graduates
belonging to )0 countries and territories. ,ince female AIT graduates constitute a
substantial number, the gender analyses were also made feasible in some asects of this
tracer study.

2.1 Survey 'rgani*ation
Crgani2ation of the sur%ey included acti%ities related to rearing coordination schema
(Aendi/ "3.2)! 5uestionnaires for the AIT graduates (Aendi/ "3.3), their emloyers
(Aendi/ "3.7) and eers (Aendi/ "3.$)! and udating the alumni addresses or the
contact details. The 5uestionnaire for the AIT graduates (2003 G mid 2008) was de%eloed
based on coordination schema, which included se%en sections, namely, idiograhic data!
earlier status (before studying at AIT)! feedbac+ on teaching, research, and ser%ices at AIT!

networ+ing! and AIT alumni suggestions for artnershi with AIT. (re'testing of the
5uestionnaires was followed by a final %ersion of the 5uestionnaires.
In order to get the wor+ done in time, the researcher was fully assisted by two full time
Bunior researchers (-esearch Associate and -esearch Assistants), two ,tudent Assistants,
and some &ocal (ersons from the countries with higher number of AIT graduates (2003 G
mid 2008). The Bunior researchers mainly in%ol%ed in sur%ey organi2ation, data collection
and data entry. &ocal (ersons and ,tudent Assistants heled in udating contact details of
the target AIT graduates and also re5uesting and reminding them to return the comleted
5uestionnaires to the Alumni Tracer ,tudy office at AIT.
2.2 Data #ollection
The data collection is one of most imortant features of this tracer study. The oulation of
this tracer study constituted by the entire AIT graduates between 2003 and mid'2008,
which total 3##8 (6 3 & I 27#2 3 "$0)). =owe%er, two AIT graduates (one male from
<ambodia and one female from :eal) were found untimely assed away and therefore
the target oulation of AIT graduates became 3##) (6 3 & I 27#" 3 "$0$). These
graduates are from )0 countries and
territories. */cet in the situation where face
to face inter%iew was ossible, the target
AIT graduates (2003 G mid 2008) were sent
5uestionnaire either by ost and email or
re5uested for the online submission. A few
emloyer and eers were directly met by the
researcher and in5uired their imression on
AIT graduates and AIT itself. &ocal (ersons
were mobili2ed to ensure the receit of
5uestionnaires by each AIT graduate (2003 ' mid 2008) resently li%ing in his or her home
country. In addition, they were re5uested to send reminders for filling and sending the
comleted 5uestionnaires to AIT. The field %isits were made to si/ countries, namely,
<ambodia, Eoa (.-, Dietnam, ,ri Ean+a, :eal and 6yanmar. The intensi%e use of local
and international telehone ser%ices were made to udate contact details of the target
alumni and to re5uest them to return comleted 5uestionnaires.
2. Data Analysis and Report =riting
The commonly used ,tatistical (ac+age for ,ocial ,cience (,(,,), latest %ersion (")) used
to enter and analy2e data. 4efore %enturing into the data analysis, data udating and
8
%alidating were done. As er re5uirements, some inter%ening %ariables were de%eloed for
cross'tabulations. The @orld 4an+0s classifications for region and the economic

This section is all about the feedbac+ of the resondent AIT graduates on the 5uality of
teaching, suer%ision and guidance on masters0 thesis and doctoral dissertation research,
and o%erall administrati%e management and ser%ice deli%ery of AIT. The %alue and the
5uality of the academic, administrati%e and other suorti%e units had tremendous role in
the academic standing of AIT itself. The eriodic feedbac+ from the AIT graduates hels
in further enhancing the teaching, research, and administrati%e standards of AIT.
A.1 ,eed(ac/s on Teaching in AIT
The target AIT graduates were in5uired on
how they would rate the teaching standard
of study at AIT by gi%ing them fi%e scale
ratings such as e/cellent, %ery good, good,
oor, and %ery oor. Cut of the "023
resonding graduates, maBority ($$L) had

AIT is %ery good followed by good (2#L). &ew resondents ("$L) had an imression that
the teaching 5uality in AIT is e%en e/cellent one. The teaching standard as ercei%ed by
the resondent AIT graduates was also analy2ed by gender, economic categories of the
countries and region which is resented in the following Table ).".
Cn an a%erage, maBority in all the three categories (gender, economic classification, and
region) indicated the teaching 5uality of AIT as %ery good. A negligible number of the
resondents in all categories indicated as oor and %ery oor. The main reasons of the oor
and %ery oor rating as reorted by them can be listed as wea+ ractical asects,
inade5uate facilities, less cooerating and heling less in thesis suer%ision, high course
fee but oor learning materials, high olitics among instructors, and heterogeneity in the
bac+ground of the students and di%ersity in teaching that had to be comromised.
A.2 ,eed(ac/s on Thesis Research in AIT
An attemt was made to gather information on the le%el of satisfaction of the target AIT
graduates on the their thesis research wor+s in terms of research suer%isor0s contribution,
committee members0 contribution, fle/ibility of choice in toic selection, research fund

72) resondents (38L) submitted through online, and remaining #$ resondents (8L) sent
by ost or in erson to the researcher during ersonal inter%iew. The 5uality of resonse is
better in the 5uestionnaires recei%ed from the ersonal inter%iew. The researcher tried to
reach target alumni through the resecti%e AITAA :ational <haters. The target grou
was recent ast fi%e years0 one (2003 to mid 2008), howe%er, the resecti%e AIT Alumni
:ational <haters were mainly constituted by the most senior ones and there was a ga
between seniors and Buniors which osed some difficulties in aroaching recent ones
through seniors.

12." Relevancies and Effectiveness of AIT Degree

-*<C66*:.ATIC:
o The 5uality of resonse found better in ersonal inter%iew methods and therefore at least 2$
ercent of the resonse should be constituted by the ersonal inter%iew in futures while doing
similar research. The resonse rate also higher in countries where %isits were made by the
researcher. Therefore more number of %isits with more time in the fields will increase resonse
rate and 5uality of the resonses.
o The recent contact details should be readily a%ailable to the researcher which would hel to get
better rate of resonse and also sa%e the time as well cost of the research. Therefore, AIT should
udate contact details before in%iting researcher to submit roosal for the tracer study in
futures.
o A substantial roortion (38L) of the resondents AIT graduates submitted 5uestionnaires
through online. 6ost of them suggested for the easy access to the AIT @ebsite. Therefore, AIT
should consider this issue so that this aroach can be used more effecti%ely in futures.
o AIT database system has to be imro%ed so that some of the +ey information such as scholarshi
tyes, number of head counts and degrees (some has got more than two degrees), and current
contact details of alumni should be readily a%ailable. Therefore the roosed field of study le%el
