WRITING: PERSONAL AND CRITICAL RESPONSES

A response essay should be formulated as a critical reflection on a topic. There should be a
balance between the proportion of personal and critical input that we should introduce.
A response essay is always composed by a thesis section, a body and a conclusion.
PARTS OF CRITICAL RESPONSES
A) Introduction. It should start by a clear thesis statement. The author and title of the ar-
ticle should be stated. Aspects of the source information will be considered.
B) Body. The argumentation should be organized in paragraphs (definition, exposition and
analysis paragraphs).
a. Situate the authors opinions in the context. Readers need background.
b. Relate our own views to the context.
c. Verify the data provided by the original author.
d. Provide explanations, arguments and examples to justify.
C) Conclusion. It should contain a short summary and a restatement of all the points;
and then we must proceed to general statements.
