di modul ini  Definition :
Analytical Exposition is a text that elaborates
the writer’s idea about the phenomenon
surrounding.

 Social Function:
 To convince the reader or listeners that the
idea is an important matter.
 To analyze a topic and to persuade the
reader that things opinion is correct and
supported by argument.

 Generic Structure:
a. Thesis
This part consists of introducing the topic
and indicating the writer‘s point of view.
b. Argument
This part explains the argument to support
the writer‘s position. The number of
arguments may vary, but each argument
must be supported by evidence and
explanation.
c. Reiteration
This part restates the writer‘s point of view /
to strengthen the thesis. It can be conclusion
in reiteration.

 Significant Lexico-grammatical Features :


a. Focus on generic human and non human
participant
Analytical exposition is a text that elaborates
the writer’s idea about the phenomenon
surrounding, it can be generic human or non
human participant, such as, social
phenomenon or natural phenomenon.
b. Using internal conjunction
We use internal conjunction to link the
arguments between two clauses. For
instance, besides, but, then, as a result, etc.
c. Using causal conjunction
We use causal conjunction to emphasize the
arguments. For example, as a result,
consequently, because, despite, due to, etc.
d. Using Simple Present Tense.
We use simple present because this text
describes the write’s opinion which is
supported by data with right time. So we use
base form of verb.
e. Using relational process
A process of giving attribute to a thing and
giving token and value to participants. For
instance, is, am, are, equal, add up to, make,
signify, code, encode, etc.
f. Using compound and complex sentences
This text consist of elaboration which has at
least two independent clauses and one or
more dependent clauses that have related
ideas.

Brochure

 Definition:
Brochure is an informative paper document that
can be folded into a template, pamphlet, or
leaflet.

 Generic Structure:
a. Title
The name of products or service offered in
brochure.
b. Content
The information given about the products or
service offered in brochure.
c. Contact Person
Name, address, or phone number person to
find out more information about something
that‘s offered in brochure.

 Social Function:
 To give information about something
 to promote or to advertising something

 Language Features:
a. Using attractive and informative words
The content of brochure should be attractive
and informative in order to leave a lasting
impression.
b. Using consistent tone and basic messages
Regardless of how we are reaching out to our
readers, it is important that the tone and
content of our messages are consistent.
c. Brochure usually succinct in languange and
eye-catching in design, and usually using a
headlines.
Brochure must emphasize the unique
features of our organization, product, service
or project.

Expressing Satisfaction and Dissatisfaction


 Definition:
Expressing satisfaction is an expression for a
feeling of happiness or pleasure because we
have achieved something or got what we
wanted. For example,super!, Great!, Fantastic!,
etc.
Expressing dissatisfaction is a feeling we
express when we do not get as enough as we
hope and feel disapointed with some conditions.
For example, Horrible!, Annoying!,
Disapointing!, etc.

2. Hortatory Exposition

 Definition:
Hortatory exposition is a type of english text
which repersents the author’s attempt to
influence the reader to do something or act in a
particular way.

 Generic Structure:
a. Thesis
This part delivers a statement or
announcement of concerned issue.
b. Argument
This part delivers reasons for concern that
will lead to recommendation.
c. Recommendation
This part delivers a statement of what
should or should not happen or be done
based on the given arguments.

 Social Function:
To persuade the audience that something
should or should not be the case or be done.

 Language Features:
a. Use The Simple Present Tense
b. Use passive sentences
c. Use modals
d. Use Adverb
e. Use temporal connectives an causal
connectives
f. Use evaluative language

Advertisement
 Definition:
Advertisement is a public announcement in a
newspaper, television, or inernet advertising
something such as a product for sale, services
offered or an event.

 Generic Structure:
a. Purpose
The intention of making the advertisement
b. Name of product
The name and brand or event to sell
c. User
The target of advertisement

 Social Function:
To inform, to persuade, to remind people about
new products and services offered.

 Characteristics:
 Evocative
 Informative
 Persuasive
 Easily understood
 Simple language
 Active Sentence

3. Explanation Text

 Definition:
An explanation text tells the audience how
something works or why something happens.
Explanations detail and logically describe the
stages in a process, such as the rainbow, or how
a car engine works

 Generic Structure An Explanation text


comprises three main parts:
• General statement; stating the
phenomenon issues which are to be
explained.
• Sequenced explanation; stating a series of
steps which explain the phenomena.
• Concluding statement.

 Social Function An Explanation Text is intended


by the writer/speaker:
To explain the audience how and why
something works or happens.

 Language Features Explanation text has its


characteristics, especially in terms of grammar,
vocabulary, and expressions. i) Grammar The
grammatical points that are typical of this text
type:

• Use of passive voice pattern


• Use of the Simple Present Tense
• Use of technical terms
• Use of words that show cause and effect
• Use of abstract noun
• Use of action verb
• Use of noun phrases

4. Discussion Text

 Definition:
• It is a text which presents a problematic
discourse or a controversial topic. A
problem is discussed from different of view.
It presents pro and contra opinion on a
certain issue.
• It is a text to train the critical thinking,
arguing something ok as long as there is a
valid reason. It contains pro and cons.

 Generic Structure:
 General statement/issue/discussion’s thesis:
opening statement and overview. Introduce the
audience to the topic of discussion.
 Arguments: one or more (argument for and
argument against. The arguments include
supporting points and elaboration/details.
Arguments for/Supporting arguments: after
stating the issue, it is necessary to present the
argument to support that one point is agreeing.
Arguments against: beside the supporting
argument, discussion text needs the arguments
which disagree to the stated issue.
 A conclusion or recommendation: sums up the
discussion and gives the opinion or
recommendation of the author of the text. It is
used to tell how to solve issue by concerning
the arguments for and against
 Social Function:
 to present arguments and information from
differing viewpoints.
 is intended by the speaker or writer to
present (at least) two points of view about
issue/problem/ topic.
 Language Features:
 Using The Simple Present Tense
-Relating verb/to be: is, am, are, etc.
-Thinking verb: feel, hope, believe, etc.
 Using modalities: must, should, could, may,
etc.
 Using additive, contrastive, and causal
connection: similarly, on the hand, however,
etc.
 Using adverbial of manner: deliberately,
hopefully, etc.
 Conjunction/transition: although, even, if, etc

A letter to the Editor (LTTE/LTE)

 Definition
 A letter sent to a publication about issues of
concern from its readers. Usually, letters are
intended for publication. Letters to the editor are
most frequently associated with newspapers and
newsmagazines.
 A letter that contains messages such as
complaints, praises, notices, etc to a certain
people or organizations or corporations.

 Generic Structure: three main parts/


components:

 media’s name: The Editor Times of India.
 salutation/greeting : Dear Editor/Dear Sir.
 body (background of the problem/issues of
concern in simple sentences/paragraphs)
 conclusion (corrective critical sentence/
paragraph).
 closing ( Trully Yours, Sincerely Yours, etc).
 signature and the sender’s name.

 Social Function:
 to serve a corrective critical function and has
capacity to spread and share knowledge as well.
 As a tool for making changes and solving
problems.

 Language Features:
 Using The Simple Present Tense
 Using modalities: can, could, may must,
should, etc.
 Using conjunction (coordinate, subordinate,
logical connectors, etc).
