Analytical exposition is a text that
elaborates the writer’s idea in order
to convince the reader/listener
about his/ her view towards
current issues .

B. Purpose
The purpose of analytical
exposition text is to convince the
reader/listener that his/her idea is
an important matter.

C. Generic structures of analytical


exposition are :
1. Thesis : introducing the topic
and indicating the writer’s point
of view.
2. Series of argument : explaining
the argument to support the
writer’s position(writer’s
argument on thesis)
3. Conclusion/Reiteration :
restating the writer’s point of
view to strengthen the thesis.
Or the writer can make
conclusion.

D. Language features in analytical


exposition are :
1. Grammar : grammatical points
that are most often used :
-use internal conjunction
-use of causal conjunction
-use simple present tense
-use relational process
-use compound and complex
sentences. Example :once
again,consequently, because, in
short, in conclusion,
arguments, reason, secondly, in
addition, furthermore, etc.

2. Hortatory Exposition Texts


a. Definition
Hortatory Exposition is a type of
English text that influences the
reader to do something or act in a
certain way.

b. Generic Structure
A Hortatory Exposition consists of
three main components. They are
thesis, arguments, and
recommendation.

c. Social Function
A Hortatory Exposition is intended
by the writer/speaker to persuade
the audience that something
should or should not be the case
or be done.

d. Language Features
Hortatory Exposition has its
characteristics, especially in terms
of grammar, vocabulary, and
expressions. It uses simple present
tense, passive sentences, modals
and adverb, subject pronoun,
temporal connectives an casual
connectives, evaluative language

3. Explanation Texts
A. Definition
Explanation text is one of the most
complicated types of text in English.
Explanation text is a text tells
processes relating to forming of
natural, social, scientific, and culture
phenomena.

B. Generic Structure
Explanation text have three main
parts of the text. There are: general
statement, sequenced explanation
and concluding statement.

C. Social Function
Explanation text is to explain to the
audience the reason “why or how”
something happened.

D. Grammar and language feature


Explanation text are use of passive
voice pattern, simple present tense,
technical terms, words that show
cause and effect, abstract noun,
action verb, and noun phrases.

4. Discussion Texts
A. Definition
Discussion text is defined as a text
to present a problematic discourse.
The problem will be discussed from
different viewpoint.

B. Generic Structure
Discussion text consists of three
main parts. There are:
1. General statemment
2. A series of paragraphs
3. A concluding paragraph

C. Social Function
Discussion text in intended by the
writer/speaker to present to points
of view about issue or problem.

D. Language Features
Discussion text has its
characteristics, especially in terms
of grammar, vocabulary, and
expressions. The discussion text
are use of the simple present
tense, medium of high degrees of
modality, quoted and reported
speech, passive voice, complex
combination of clauses, and
complex sentences.
