1. Definition
Analytical Exposition is a text that elaborates the
writer’s idea about the phenomenon surronding.

2. Generic Structures:
a. Thesis: Introducing the topic and indicating the
writer’s points of view.
b. Argument: Explaining the argument to support the
writer’s position.
c. Reiteration: Restating the writer’s point of view / to
strengthen the thesis.

3. Social Function:
To convince the audience that his/her idea is an
important matter.

4. Language Features:
a. Grammar: Internal conjunction. Causal
conjunction, Simple present, Relational process,
 Compound and complex sentence, Words that link
argument.
b. Vocabulary: Once, Consequently, Because, In short,
in conclusion, Arguments, Reason, Secondly, In
addition, Furthermore.
c. Pronounciation
d. Common expressions: the following are the reason
why.., Based on the arguments above...

Learning Activity 2: (Hortatory Exposition Texts)

1. Definition
Hortatory is a text which represents the attemp of the
writer to have addressee do something in certain way.

2. Generic Structure:
a. Thesis: Statement or announcement of concerned
issue.
b. Arguments: Reasons for concern that will lead to
recommendation.
c. Recommendation: Statement of what should or
should not happen or be done based on the given
arguments.

3. Social Function:
To persuade the audience that something should or
should not be the case or be done.

4. Language Features:
a. Grammar: Simple present tense, Passive sentences,
Modal and adverb, Subject pronoun, Temporal
connectives and causal connectives, Evaluative
language.
b. Mini-Dictionary (Vocabulary): Suggest, Recommend,
 Should strong, However, Advantages, Reason,
Argument, Think, Important, Make, Firstly.
c. Common expressions: The following are the reasons
why, Based on the arguments above, I think we
should, ... is important to... , It could be argued.

Learning Activity 3: (Explanation Texts)

1. Definition
Explanation is a text which tells process relating to the
forming of natural scientific and cultural phenomena.
Explanation Text is to say “why” and ‘how” of the
forming of the phenomena.

2. Generic Structure:
a. General statement: stating the phenomenon issues
which are to be explained.
b. Sequenced explanation: stating a series of steps
which explain the phenomena.
c. Concluding the phenomena.

3. Social Function:
To explain the audience “how and why” something
works or happens.

4. Language Features:
a. Grammar: Passive voice pattern, Simple present,
Technical terms, Cause and effect words, Abstract
noun, Action verbs, Noun phrases.
b. Vocabulary: First, Then, Next, Because, Lead to,
However, Include, As a consequence, resulted in.
 c. Common expressions: For example, These include,
For instance, As shown by, On the other hand,
Including.

Learning Activity 4: (Disucssion Texts)

1. Definition
Discussion is a text which present a problematic
discourse.

2. Generic Structures:
a. General statement: to intoduce the audience to the
topic of discussion.
b. A series of paragraph: have points for and againts
the topic.
c. A concluding paragraph that sums up the
discussion and gives the opinion of the author of the
text.

3. Social Function:
To present two point of view about issue or problem; to
present arguments from differing points of view about
issue or problem.

4. Language Features:
a. Grammar: Simple present, Medium high degree of
modality, Quote, Passive voice, Focus on beginning
sentence, Complex combination clauses, Complex
 sentence.
b. Vocabulary: Argue, Possibly, Exactly, However, ...
but..., Wonder.
c. Common expressions: Let’s begin, Some people say,
Others argue, I think, In my opinion, As far as I
know, Opinion among...
