Evelyns Expressions Eta Zeta Chapter has had two very busy and productive months. We have accomplished a lot! What a great January meeting! The program, Our Heritage: Steps through Time, was great. The Readers Theatre presentation, The Texas Twelve, A Glance Back, honoring the founders of Delta Kappa Gamma was written by Dianne McFerren, Kappa Upsilon Chapter. Thanks to program director, Mary Claire Welch, for her leadership in this presentation. Thanks also to the following participants: Mary Bixler, Ona Calvo, Arlene Delgado Barrios, Ida Durham, Sharon Kraus, Melanie Moseley, Joanne Szalay, Leigh Taylor, Elizabeth Taheri, and Jane Walker. The cloche hats really set the tone. It is important to review our history periodically. The harmony in Were So Proud of You was so beautiful that I asked for a repeat of the song. Thanks to Music Chairman, Johnnie Cunningham and thanks to Sandra Foster Brown for writing the words. The recommitment ceremony led by Cynthia DeVies was touching. Our Annual and Biennial Reports were completed and mailed on time. Thanks to Dr. Ona Calvo, Cynthia Devies, Sandra Foster Brown, Karen Hickman, Melanie Moseley, Jane Walker and Mary Claire Welch. Wow! Great Job! I also submitted the Presidents 2013 Annual Report. On February 27th Eta Zeta members were invited to read to students once again this year at B.H. Macon Elementary.

We are still working on membership. Lets continue Annie Calling under the leadership of Membership Chair, Karen Hickman. Three new members were nominated for membership in February. A New Member Orientation was held for Seretha Merchant, Heather Hawthorne, and Beverly Leonard on March 7, 2014 at Matts Rancho Martinez Restaurant. They were accompanied by their sponsors Evelyn Hamilton and Mary Bixler. Executive Board members Joanne Szalay, Sandra Foster Brown and Mary Claire Welch helped to orient the nominees to our Society. All three have accepted to become members and are to be initiated at the March meeting. You did it! You made it happen! Thanks to all for making our Annie Project, The Look of Success/ Centsless Shopping, a success. Thanks to Sandra Foster Brown for her leadership. Thanks to sponsors, contributors and all participants. Eta Zeta sisters are powerful. Our Monday night speaker, Johnlyn Mitchell, was awesome. She has always had the look of success and was able to share valuable insights with all of the ladies who were invited to attend our meeting and style show of clothing dos and donts for an interview or in the workplace. Since our Centless Shopping Spree project ended on March 1, 2014, I have been singing songs that speak of helping others such as Touch Somebodys Life with your Goodness, If I can Help Somebody as I Pass Along, and Reach Out and Touch Somebodys Hand. The nine ladies who we helped by inviting them to shop at our EZ Boutique expressed their thankfulness, gratefulness, and demonstrated happiness at the end of the project on Saturday. What a wonderful legacy of service for Eta Zeta Chapter to leave! Congratulations to Cynthia DeVies and Sharon Kraus. They both will play at the DKG International Convention in Indianapolis. Cynthia will play the prelude for the Presidents Banquet and Sharon will play the prelude for the Celebration Luncheon. Congratulations to Dr. Yvonne Manuel and Aundrea Wright Young. Yvonne presided for the first time over the Dallas Fort Worth Regional Association of School Psychologist January 31, 2014. Aundrea was a presenter at the Texas Computer Education Association Conference (TCEA) held February 3-7, 2014. Her presentation was entitled Ipads, eReaders, and More, Oh, My! At our March 24, 2014 meeting Mrs. Vernell Gregg will be the speaker/presenter. I was already sold on DKG, but the convention took me to another level. If you have never attended a Texas State Organization, move to that level with me as we continue to move forward. Again, we did it! We made it happen! Thanks for going the extra mile. Forward moving ever,

4 Johnlyn Mitchell Shares Wisdom for Look of Success
Johnlyn Mitchell addressed Eta Zeta members and their guests at the February 24th chapter meeting about interview strategies and the wisdom of interview fashion. The nine ladies to participate in the March 1st EZ Boutique Centsless Shopping Spree were in attendance to hear her tips on what an interviewer is looking for in professional appearance and behavior from a potential employee. The young ladies accepting the invitation to participate were Tyrenie Davis, Maria Mancera, Marivel Mancera, Angelica Nieto, Tania Nieto, Dee Robinson, Anahi Rodriguez, Milagros Rodriguez, and Dorothy White. Johnlyn is a former principal in the Dallas Independent School District. She served as an administrator at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. She currently is serving as the Senior Executive Director of North East Texas Academic Partnerships. Johnlyn Mitchells address was followed by a style show featuring Eta Zeta models Evelyn Hamilton, Cynthia DeVies, Aundrea Young, Ona Calvo, and Mary Claire Welch. As each model arrived, the members and guests voted using a green paddle for appropriate or a red paddle for inappropriate. The models presented themselves illustrating the dos and donts Johnlyn had described in her address. Each model returned for a second time to the runway to model how the inappropriate clothing could become appropriate. The meeting was filled with wisdom and laughter. Most of all, the members and guests reported the program to be of great value. Each of the guests were invited to the Centsless Shopping Spree on March 1st to select gently used or new clothing needed for interviews or work experiences.
Eta Zeta Troupe Takes Stage during Our Heritage: Steps Through Time Program
Thirteen Eta Zeta members donned their cloche hats and help the founders of Delta Kappa Gamma come to life at our January 27 th Eta Zeta Chapter meeting. The meetings title was Our Heritage: Steps Through Time. A Readers Theatre authored and originally directed by Dianne McFerren, past President of Kappa Upsilon, entitled The Texas Twelve, A Glance Back provided the script for the Eta Zeta ladies. The professional climate of the times, social events, scientific discoveries, and milestones in the world of Texas sports were woven throughout the script. The presentation allowed the introduction of our founders and our Society in an interesting and humorous way. We had 13 actors to bring the times alive. Liz Taheri, Jane Walker, Joanne Szalay, Ona Calvo, Mary Bixler, Leigh Taylor, Melanie Moseley, Evelyn Hamilton, Ida Durham, Arlene Delgado Barrios, Sharon Kraus, and Mary Claire Welch presented the review of the history of the times of which our founders were a part. Lisa Bagley practiced with the group, but was unable to participate due to illness. The program was well-received and Mary Claire Welch, narrator, would like to thank all of the Eta Zeta members who practiced and participated. Everyone looked great in their cloche hats. It was great fun working together to learn more about the Society and the exceptional women educators who really made the organization come to life. EZ Boutique Opens Doors for Centsless Shopping Spree Eta Zeta Chapter came together to create the EZ Boutique for the nine ladies who had attended the February 24, 2014 Eta Zeta chapter meeting to learn about The Look of Success. The St. Mark Presbyterian Church Family Center was transformed into a shopping venue complete with racks of gently used and new clothing donated by Eta Zeta members from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Clothing was sized and priced at a Centsless amount so that the ladies could select fashion combinations without the restraint of cost. Eta Zeta members worked before, during ,and after to make the shopping experience truly a gift to the nine participants. Cynthia DeVies provided refreshments for the shoppers and Judy Bryant provided fashion posters to lend a retail ambiance to the space. Mary Bixler and Norma Matthews helped to provide signage for the boutique. Mary Claire Welch worked with Joanne Szalay and Liz Taheri to provide bags with our EZ Boutique labels and clothing size labels for each item of clothing. Leigh Taylor acted as photographer for the event capturing some wonderful moments of the day. She also helped to provide music for the shoppers to enjoy. Chelsea McNair and Jean Stoner helped to plan the music to be included. Leigh Taylor and Joanne Szalay were responsible for securing the St. Mark Presbyterian Family Center and organizing the set-up and clean-up efforts. Sandra Foster Brown, Educational Excellence Chair, provided leadership, encouragement and organization to make the program and the Centless Shopping Spree possible. She also was able to gather perfumes, creams, and other beauty items to be included in special gift bags for each of the guests. Evelyn Hamilton helped to collect clothing, act as a sponsor and to provide support for others to make the event a success. Each of the participants were sponsored by a one or two Eta Zeta members. Each sponsor helped to discover their participants ambitions and dreams for a chance in the working world, provided transportation, offered positive feedback, and contributed to their enjoyment of the event. Pat Gerecci helped to find the candidates for the project. Tyrenie Davis was sponsored by Evelyn Hamilton. Maria Mancera was sponsored by Ona Calvo and Chelsea McNair. I have been hearing a lot of bragging here lately. Apparently there has been quite of bit of teamwork occurring in the chapters in order to meet the deadlines for forms, lists, and reports. Music to my ears. I am proud to tell you that Area 9 is at 100% for chapter profiles, which is great considering only four of the 26 chapters in Area 9 meet in January. Congratulations, chapters!! By now many of you have nominated or elected new officers for the next biennium. If you are not in the officer category there are many, many roles to fill in your chapter. The more I visit chapters the more I am convinced that the interests and passions of members are met through the programs and projects. It requires the diligence and creativity of committee chairs and committee members to plan, prepare, and deliver programs and projects that reflect those interests and passions. It is not too early to consider what your role will be in the next biennium. Annie Webb Blanton is looking for YOU. Global Awareness Committee Report By Norma Matthews Norma Matthews, Co-Chair of the Global Awareness Committee of Eta Zeta, has been very involved during February and March, mainly representing Eta Zeta chapter through activities with the Dallas Chapter United Nations Association. Norma and her husband, Bill, were in New York City during the heaviest snow and ice period, the first week of February. Both of our flights went smoothly, but in between the two flights there was severe cold and plenty of ice and snow in NYC. We managed to get to all of our appointments, though. Taxis were still running, she reports. On February 4 th Bill and I attended a very special event at the United Nations Secretariat. A beautiful mosaic done by Norman Rockwell, the Golden Rule Mosaic-Do Unto Others, had been refurbished and was being re-dedicated as a gift from the U.S. to the U.N. Its dedication was initiated by Thanksgiving Foundation of Dallas in 1985. Twenty-two people from Dallas attended the event. The Deputy Secretary General of the U.N. gave the keynote speech. Dallas City Council representative, Phillip Kingston, also attended the event as a representative of Mayor Mike Rawlings. It was a beautiful, meaningful occasion. Annemarie Carlson attended the event representing the U.N. Dept. of Public Information and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International . On February 7 th , the annual Members Day at the U.N. was held at the North Lawn Building, U.N. Headquarters. There were 700 attendees present from all the various 120 UNA Chapters across the nation. There were many people from various NGOs in the New York area in attendance also. The theme was The United Nations: Building Peace in an Age of Upheaval. Topics of lectures throughout the day were: Making Peace, Keeping Peace, Building Peace; What World Do We Want in the Post 2015 Development Agenda; and Human Rights Challenges: 2014 and Beyond. During March, I have been busy representing the Dallas Chapter U.N.A. and Eta Zeta Chapter at various celebrations for the U.N. International Womens Day. The first week of March I attended the Womens

Daniel Webster Elementary in Dallas Independent School District was Onas place of employment for the following four years. Buckner from 2002 to 2006 and then served as interim Principal at Burleson Elementary from 2006 to 2007. She served as Assistant Principal at Seagoville for two years and then made the decision to retire. While in retirement, Ona was persuaded to be re-hired to teach first Talented and Gifted and then 4th grade at B.H. Macon Elementary. Ona Calvo is active in her community. As a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she is serving as the Conductress of the Cockrell Hill Delta Flora 794 and serves on the Grand Chapter of Texas Providing Comfort Committee. All four of Onas grandchildren live in Forney, Texas where she has been able to enjoy being a part of their lives. Ona continues to teach fourth grade today. She loves the classroom and she says, I knew in eighth grade I wanted to be a teacher. I had a teacher who had treated me badly and I wanted to make sure children were treated fairly. I love making a difference in childrens lives! We are very happy to have Ona as a member of Eta Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. With respect and love, Eta Zeta Chapter
