My, my, my, how

the time does fly! Just
over a year ago, I began
my teaching career. I mean the one I
get paid to do.

DKG has promoted

mentoring for early career
educators for several
years. In 2012, they made
it, the second international service
project at the International Convention in
New York City with the acronym SEE
Supporting Early-Career Educators.

I really began teaching the year

my daughter was born. Of course,
there was a lot of learning on my
part as well. Then two years later
came baby number 2, a son. There
was much learning that year as well
as figuring out how to take care of a
toddler and a newborn. A newborn
the experts told me wouldnt live
more than a year and to expect much
less than that. It was really rough.
Then 14 months after the second
came a third, another boy. And with
it my husband suggesting I do
something with all that time at
home. While I wasnt ready to do
anything, luckily, the suggestion was
for school and not a job.

Problems with funding for education,

focus on testing, and diverse student
populations make being a teacher
challenging. Studies have shown that
almost half of the new teachers leave
within the first five years. Those new
teachers who receive mentoring in the
first five years are more likely to continue
their teaching profession.

Eta Zeta members have acted as

mentors since this project began. They
have made phone calls and visits to early
career teachers; helped with lesson plans
and bulletin boards; given advice about
classroom management and teacher/
parent conferences; and donated
supplies and materials. Since August
2014, Sandra McMillen, Diana Gonzalez,
Arlene Delgado, and Elizabeth Taheri
have submitted documentation for 14
hours of mentoring and $700 in materials
donated.

By the time my youngest was

about two, I thought maybe, I could
take one night class and see how it
went. I felt if the class time was near
bedtime for my children, maybe it
would be okay. What I didnt realize
was the class I signed up for required
observation hours. At the time, I was
pretty isolated. Our neighbors were
not right next door and most of the
residents in the area were either
elderly or didnt speak very much
English.

Perhaps you have reached out to

an early-career educator or you know
someone who would benefit from a
phone call or visit. DKG is keeping track
of mentoring hours, so please let us know
when, where, who, how, and how long
you helped an early-career educator.
We will send the data in to be counted.

Neither my parents nor my

husbands parents were available
during the day, and we couldnt
afford childcare.

societies. I also managed to have

enough credits in a single semester to
make the Presidents List.
During my last semester of
school, the principal at my childrens
school approached me about taking a
teaching position in the spring
semester. It was my dream job with
my kids, a Gifted and Talented
teacher, and working with people I
knew, respected, and liked. I had
completed much of my teaching
internship at my kids school and I
was familiar with procedures, faculty
and staff, parents, and the students.
Graduation came and I began my
new career in January 2014. I
quickly fell into the routine of the
class schedule and became familiar
with my students. Oh, what
personalities they had!

I persevered, however, through

61/2 years of night school, summer
sessions, driving to Denton from
Southeast Dallas (think between
Seagoville and Balch Springs) after
dropping kids off at school, seminars,
workshopsyou know the drill. All
to get the classes and credits I
needed in a timely manner in order
to graduate before it was time for me
to retire. It was slow going when I
had two little ones at home and
could only take classes at night.
Many semesters were spent taking
one or two classes. Eventually, of
course, all three children were in
public school and I had larger
amounts of time I could spend in
college courses. I had worked my
way up to a full course load and
studied diligently. My children would
probably say I didnt give them a lot
of time and I didnt do things with
them (play dolls or games or
whatever) and thats true, but, I feel
if youre going to work at something,
you should do your best. My kids
were healthy, clothed and fed, and
for the most part happy. And I began
to receive invitations to join honor

Naturally, I had some wobbles,

but, what really kicked my tail was
the paperwork and procedures. For
the most part, I took it all in stride.
It would get dome when it got done.
But some things just cant wait and
students are looking to you to make
sure everything is taken care of in a
timely manner. My own kids of
course stayed late after school with
me, and they were real troopers.
Sometimes it worked out for

For the most part, my first year of

teaching was a great experience. As I
said, I was lucky enough to be in the
same building as my children. I had
some awesome, experienced teachers
to help guide and encourage me; the
administrative team was always
supportive and helpful where
possible; and the students were
fantastic. The tough part of teaching
isnt usually the students - its the
paperwork, red tape, and hoops, you
have to jump through, just to do your
job.

everyone I stayed to work and my

kids had their activities.
Something youre not warned
about while youre taking classes is
that you are put on committees - lots
of committees. You are in charge of
whatever activities the previous
teacher sponsored as well. Whether
you know anything about them or
not. Any semblance of free time you
might have is taken up with
planning for a committee or going to
another committees meeting. Fire
drills, evacuation drills, lockdown
drills (and occasionally a lockdown),
and severe weather drills also hinder
with the precious little real teaching
time you have.

The other irksome thing was

(and still is to some degree) teachers
dont collaborate the way my pie-inthe-sky ideals led me to believe. I
thought we were all working toward
the same end preparing our
students for their future. Apparently,
more than a few are just drawing a
paycheck and are somewhat
poisonous to the morale and peace of
a workplace. You are told these
things by professors and classmates
that have worked in schools in other
capacities, but, you want to believe,
it will be different for you and where
you are.

Dallas-Fort Worth
School Psychologists
Meet for Winter
Conference

I woke up with Red on my

Mind
By Evelyn Hamilton
On Friday February 6, 2015, I woke
up with red on my mind. I selected my red
dress that I was going to wear. Red and
gold are our colors and I love to wear red
to special Eta Zeta activities. However,
Friday I wore red because I wanted to be a
part of reminding all that heart disease is a
womens issue.

Yvonne Manuel, Ph.D., member of

Delta Kappa Gamma, Eta Zeta Chapter,
organized the Winter Conference for
Dallas-Fort Worth Regional Association of
School Psychologists as acting President
of the Dallas-Fort Worth Regional
Association of School Psychologists, 2014
-2015. DFW RASP is a National
Association of School Psychologistsapproved provider of Professional
Development Hours. The 2015 Winter
conference held January 30th was the
second of three conferences to be held
during the school year. This conference
was held at the Arlington ISD Mac Bernd
Professional Development Center and it
featured Mrs. Annette Chastain, MSW,
Conscious Discipline Program Certified
Instructor. Mrs. Chastain is a Licensed
Clinical Social Worker from The
Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs,
Oregon. The morning session was entitled
Building Blocks for Safety, Connection
and Problem Solving. The afternoon
session was entitled Fostering SelfRegulation Skills in all Children.
Participants were able to earn professional
staff development hours for the sessions
attended. There were over one hundred
Licensed Specialists in School Psychology
and Psychology Interns in attendance.

I am a Dear Neighbor volunteer for

the American Heart Association. On Friday
morning, I reviewed my materials on how
to contact my neighbors. I read the Know
the Warning Signs of Heart Attack and
Stroke on the back of the package. I
remembered that the signs of a heart attack
for women could be something as simple
as indigestion. I reminded myself to
re-examine the signs for women and to tell
my Eta Zeta sisters
likewise.
Friday
evening, I attended
an activity. I wore
my red dress. We
practiced CPR; learned how to use a
defibrillator, discussed eating healthy and
ate healthy food. We were reminded that
heart disease is truly a womens issue also.
Upon arrival at home, I went to bed with
red on my mind.

The Texas State

Organization Convention will be
held in San Antonio from June 24
to 27. Alamo city convention
attendees will need to bring a tote
bag to facilitate the collection and
organization of convention
materials.

Look who The Delta Kappa

Gamma Society International is
partnering with!
UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela
Foundation, and the Hamburg
Society are all partners with Delta
Kappa Gamma in a huge project to
help more girls and boys get a quality
education in 13 needy countries in
Africa! We, as members of DKG and
Eta Zeta, can be very proud of this
work.

In previous years, a new tote

bag was supplied to each
participant when she arrived at the
convention. This year, members
who have attended a previous
convention are to bring a favorite
DKG Convention tote bag to reuse.

The work to provide access to

education and hygiene goes on in
Angola, Malawi, Mozambique,
Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe,
Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ethiopia,
Madagascar, Sierra Leone, and
Guinea Gissau.

New convention goers will not

have a tote bag. Therefore, the
committee is asking you to donate
a tote bag from a previous
convention for a new attendee.
Also, there will be a display of tote
bags from previous conventions at
this years San Antonio
convention. It will be interesting to
see how many styles and
convention years are represented
in the display.

At Eta Zetas January 2015

meeting, we collected $93.56 for the
Schools for Africa project. Thank you
to all who contributed!

Please bring a previous

convention tote bag to our Eta Zeta
meeting on Monday February 23.
These tote bags will be taken to
Michelle Grandinetti, the Area 9
Coordinator, who will then deliver
them to the committee. Thank you!
