COMPREHENSION

PRE-READING STRATEGIES
STORY PREVIEW - engage students in the story they are about to
hear, to acquaint them with unfamiliar words and to give them
an opportunity to predict what is going to happen in the story
STUDENT PREDICTIONS predicting a storys outcome keeps
the reader engaged with the text.
PURPOSE FOR LISTENING- both the stages, previewing and
predicting provide a purpose for listening, and a reason to read
the story.

WHILE READING STRATEGIES
DISCUSSING PREDICTIONS- 1 of the purposes of listening to the story.
As the teacher reads the story, the children can discover which of the
predictions are confirmed.
TEACHING COGNITIVE STRATEGIES- teacher asks literal and inferential
questions
TEACHING META-COGNITIVE STRATEGIES-self questioning and fix up
techniques
REVIEWING THE STORY- teacher could discuss the original predictions
with students and then review the main points in the text.
POST-READING STRATEGIES
Retelling the story- to give student opportunity to incorporate the story into their
own schema, to broaden their vocabulary, to learn the structure of literary text and
to improve their oral language skills.
INTERACTIVE STORY CIRCLE-whole class activity, teacher facilitates
SEQUENCE CARDS- engage in small group cooperative learning under
teacher supervision.
STORY DRAMATISATION-dramatisation of the story in group or whole
class participation.
STORY MAPS- student build a story path or map when retelling the story
