INTRODUCTION
The process of implementing a damage
identification strategy for aerospace, civil and
mechanical engineering infrastructure is
referred to as structural health
monitoring(SHM).

What is a D A M A G E?

It means basically affecting the systems current or future
Performance.
Changes to
material and/or geometric properties of the systems
boundary conditions
system connectivity

WHAT IS A SHM PROBLME?
SHM problem is fundamentally one of the
statistical pattern recognition (SPR) problem.

KEY NOTES - Damage
all damage begins at the material level, such damage is referred to as a
defect or flaw.
Under appropriate loading scenarios, the defects or flaws grow and coalesce
at various rates to cause, component and then system-level damage.

KEY NOTES - Failure
As the damage grows , it will reach a point where it
affects the system operation to a point that is no longer
acceptable to the user. This point is referred to as failure.
fatigue or corrosion damage : Incremental accumulation
of damage over a period of time.

SHM PROCESS
the observation of a structure or mechanical system over time using
periodically spaced measurements.
The extraction of damage-sensitive features from above measurements.
The statistical analysis of these features to determine the current state of
system health.
