CONVERT MEASUREMENTS AND
RATES (1.1)

Because there are two main systems of measurement used in the

world today (the metric system and the American system) as well
as many dierent units within each system (meters, inches, feet,
yards, miles, etc), it is often necessary to convert units.
Well be using a process called unit analysis to convert
measurements.

USA

Myanmar
Liberia

What do these three countries have in common?

Here are a few handy conversions. You can nd more on Page 1025
of your book or in your agenda.
1 yard = 3 feet
1 mile = 5280 feet
1 foot = 12 inches

1 kilo(unit) = 1000 units

1 unit = 100 centi(units)
1 unit = 1000 milli(units)

1 inch = 2.54 centimeters

1 mile 1.61 kilometers
1 gallon = 4 quarts
1 quart = 2 pints
1 pint = 2 cups
1 cup = 8 ounces

1 cubic centimeter (cm3) = 1 mL

Use unit analysis to convert from one measurement to the other.

Convert 33.5 years to seconds

Convert 6.2 km to in

Convert 42 cm3 to L

We can also use unit analysis to convert rates. Watch carefully!

On a highway in France, the speed limit is 80 km/h. Convert to
mph.

The speed of light is 300,000,000 m/s. What is the speed of light in

mph?
