Objectives
• Differentiate English system and Metric
system
• Convert one unit to another unit
• Follow the correct steps in converting
units
• Choose a correct conversion factor in
each conversion of units problem
What is Measurement?

A number that shows the size or

amount of something.
Why do we need to learn to
measure?
Valuable skill for a job
Valuable skill for hobbies
Valuable skill for everyday life
History of Measurement
One of the earliest types of measurement concerned that of length.
These measurements were usually based on parts of the body.
Devices that can be used to measure:
Ruler
Yard Stick
Meter Stick
Tape Measure
Protractor
Framing Square
Architect and Engineering Scales
English and
Metric System
There are two main Systems
of Measurement

English and Metric System

English Units
Requires a conversion ratio to
move between measurements

Metric (International System)

Based on the number 10
(Power of 10)
How can you tell the difference between a Standard or
Metric ruler?

Count the spaces between whole numbers.

If you get 8, 16, 32 or 64 spaces you have
A Standard Ruler

If you get 10 spaces you have

A Metric Ruler
How can you tell the difference between a Standard or
Metric ruler?
English System
Metric System
• The metric system is a decimal system of
weights and measures.
• It is based on the unit of length called the
METER.
• The metric system is now called, The
International System of Measurement (SI
for short).
• To get the meter, they divided a line from
the north pole to the equator into 10 million
parts!

The Seven
Base Units
Conversion
Factor
A conversion factor is a number used to change
one set of units to another, by multiplying or
dividing. When a conversion is necessary, the
appropriate conversion factor to an equal value
must be used. For example, to convert inches to
feet, the appropriate conversion value is
12 inches equal 1 foot.
Conversion factors are a set
of fractions that ALWAYS
equal one. The numerator
and the denominator have
equal value.
Dimensional
Analysis
Dimensional analysis is the
process by which a conversion
factor is used to convert a value
from one unit to another.
To decide which of the two
conversion factors to use make
sure the units from the known
value will cancel leaving units for
the unknown value.
General Steps in Performing Dimensional Analysis

• Identify the "given" information in the problem. Look for a

number with units to start this problem with.
• What is the problem asking you to "find"? In other words,
what unit will your answer have?
• Use ratios and conversion factors to cancel out the units that
aren't part of your answer, and leave you with units that are
part of your answer.
• When your units cancel out correctly, you are ready to do
the math. You are multiplying fractions, so you multiply the
top numbers and divide by the bottom numbers in the
fractions.
Conversion of
Units
How many minutes are in 2.5 hours?

Conversion factor

2.5 hr x 60 min = 150 min

1 hr

By using dimensional analysis / factor-label method, the

UNITS ensure that you have the conversion right side up,
and the UNITS are calculated as well as the numbers!
A rattlesnake is 2.44 m long. How long is the
snake in cm?

2.44 m x 100 cm = 244 cm

What is wrong with the following setup?

1.4 day x 1 day x 60 min x 60 sec
