Lesson/Topic: Basic Concepts of Measurement

Competency: The learner identifies the basic concept of measurement
Lesson Objective/s:
(1) identify English and Metric system
(2) appreciate the uses of measurements in our daily life
(3) apply in real life situation

Key Concept
Nonstandard Units of Measure

 Pace (hakbang) – distance of one step to another step from heel to heel
 Foot (talampakan) – distance from the heel to the tip of the toe
 Cubit – distance from the tip of the elbow to the tip of the middle finger
 Digit (daliri) – width of the finger
 Hand span (dangkal) – distance from the thumb to the little finger of a
hand that is spread wide

Standard Systems of Measurement

The U.S. Customary or English System
The units used in the U.S. Customary or English system of measurement were derived from the
nonstandard units of measure such as the inch, foot, and yard. The Roman contribution in this system was the
use of 12 as the base number. Hence, this particular system of measurement requires a good working
knowledge of the conversion table before using the units. Table 3. Shows the common units in the English
system.

Unit Abbreviation or Symbol Conversion

Inch in 1 ft = 12 in
Foot ft 1 yd = 3 ft
Yard yd 1 mi = 5,280 ft
Mile mi
Ounce oz 1 lb = 16 oz
Pound lb 1 ton = 2,240 lb
Ton tn
Pint pt 1 pt = 2 cups
Quart qt 1 qt = 2 pt
Gallon gal 1 gal = 4 qt

The Metric System

the metric system is the most common system of measurement used in the world today. It is
based on a decimal system that uses multiples of 10 in performing mathematical operations. This makes the
system more convenient and practical to use. Because the metric system is in base 10, some calculation and
conversions from one metric unit to another can be performed by just moving the decimal point.

Origin Unit Symbol Relation to Meter

Greek Kilometer km 1 000
Hectometer hm 100
Dekameter dam 10
Roman (Latin) Decimeter dm 0.1
Centimeter cm 0.01
Millimeter mm 0.001
Table 3.2 Common units in the Metric system for length

The Systeme International d’Unites, which was later known as the International System of Units
(with international abbreviation of SI), is based on the metric system. The General Conference on Weights and
Measures established the seven basic units in the system and these are listed in Table 3.3.

Quantity Unit
Length Meter (m)
Weight/Mass Kilogram (kg)
Time Second (s)
Electric current Ampere (A)
Thermodynamic temperature Kelvin (K)
Amount of substance Mole (mol)
Luminous intensity Candela (cd)

Converting Measures from the English System to the Metric System

Though the metric system is the most commonly used system of measurement here in the
Philippines, there are units in the English system that are still widely used in other countries. To address the
difference between the two systems, conversion must be put into consideration.

Quantity Conversion
Length 1in. = 2.54 cm
1 ft = 0.3048 m
1 yd = 0.9144 m
1 mi = 1.6093 km
Weight 1 lb = 0.4536 kg
1 oz = 28.3495 grams (g)
Capacity 1 gal = 4.546 liters (L)
