Frequently Asked Questions:

Electives:
1. What courses do you recommend that I should take for an elective?
For a list of electives taken by upper-year students with reviews, go to the following link

ectives_descriptions_2012-13.pdf

Guaranteed Admission:
1. My acceptance letter says to "maintain an acceptable final average." What does this really mean?
It is rare for offers to be withdrawn. In the unlikely event that your marks drop significantly, you will
have the opportunity to explain what happened. There is usually a good reason (like an illness).
2. What courses do I have to take in my first year to guarantee my admission to Rotman Commerce in
second year?
RSM100Y, ECO100Y, and MAT133Y (or its equivalent) are the required first-year courses that fulfill the
terms of the Rotman Commerce guaranteed admission. Students should note that there are minimum
grades that must be achieved in each course:
1. Obtain a final mark of 67% in Management (RSM 100Y) and Economics (ECO 100Y), within one
calendar year
2. Obtain a final mark of 63% in Linear Algebra (MAT133Y), 60% in Calculus I (MAT 135 and MAT
136), 55% in Calculus (MAT 137) or 55% in Analysis (MAT 157), within one calendar year
3. Complete a minimum of 4.0 credits
The Y after the course code (ex:RSM100Y) means that it is a full year course. If there is a H1F after the
course code (ex: RSM219H1F) that means that it is a first term course and if there is a H1S after the
course code (ex: RSM222H1S) that means that it is the second term course.

Breadth Requirements:
1. What are breadth requirements?
Courses in the Faculty of Arts and Science are classified into five Breadth categories by subject content:
1. Creative and Cultural Representations
2. Thought, Belief, and Behaviour
3. Society and Its Institutions
4. Living Things and Their Environment
5. The Physical and Mathematical Universes
The purpose of the Breadth Requirement is to ensure all students graduating from the Faculty of Arts
and Science have chosen courses across a broad range of subject areas in the Faculty as part of their
undergraduate education.
Students must take at least 4 full-course equivalents (FCEs) that have been designated as satisfying the
Breadth Requirement. These 4 credits must be either (a) at least 1 FCE in each of any 4 of the 5
categories above, or (b) at least 1 FCE in each of any 3 of the 5 categories, and at least 0.5 FCE in each of
the other 2 categories.
deg_reqs2013.htm)
Of the 4.0 credits, all commerce students are required to complete 1 credit of BR=1. It is
recommended that you take a course that fulfills your BR=1 breadth requirement in your first year.
2. How do I know which breadth requirement the course I am taking is covering?
You will know which breadth requirement your course fulfills by looking at the description and it will
which looks something like this:
BR=# i.e. BR=3 -> this means that the course fulfills the breadth 3 requirement (society and its
institutions) As you look at the upper-year courses in the program, you will notice that some of your
upper-year courses will fulfill BR=2, BR=3 and BR=5. This is why we suggest that you take an elective that
fulfills your BR=1 in your first year is because of the limited number of electives offered in the program.
If the class covers two breadth requirements then 0.5 credits it credited to each breadth. For an
example if your class covers BR=2 and BR=3, then 0.5 credits would be allocated to BR=2 and the other
0.5 credits would be allocated to BR=3.

Does any of this still sound confusing? Dont worry! Know that you can track your breadth requirements
using degree explore (http://www.rosi.utoronto.ca/degree_explorer.php)
