Calendar/morning routine is working well. Students now recognise that it's me doing it and what order
I do things in which makes it run a lot easier.
Show and Tell roster was well planned and students knew that if it wasn't their day they didn't do
news. It stopped students coming up to me (except S) and saying they had news.
Daily 5 - sentence beginnings - students didn't quite understand how to change the sentences. Some
more practice with some pre-written sentence beginnings may allow the students the practice that
they need.
Students enjoyed the inferring activity and coming to a conclusion about who it was staying in the
house. They do need some more practice on linking inferring to their reading which will be the focus
of the daily 5 for the next couple of weeks. Students were engaged throughout the activity and
focused well.
Maths - Students completed one thinkboard as a group and worked really well during the group work.
When moving back to their desks they were focused as I waited until they were sitting before
handing out the number stories. Having the number stories written about students in the class also
helped keep their focus. Most students seemed to be able to complete the thinkboard on their own. A
few students still needed a little bit of assistance.

Maths - cooperation/group work was not ideal. Students need some explicit teaching on group work
and what it should look like. Needed to tell the students before they went off exactly how group work
should like (eg ask one person, pass the pen on to your team mate etc). Students were arguing and
snatching as they all wanted to be the writer.
No groups managed to get ten responses as they spent too long arguing.
Students initially understood what to ask but seemed to get confused trhoughout the lesson about
how to exactly ask the questions. Future lessons will assist with this.
Writing - students managed to plan their stories but then had problems translating the plan to an
actual story. Majority thought that they had to just copy the plan in to their writing books. Stopped
them writing and had a session during D5 writing to explain how they would turn their plans in the
stories. This assisted them a little in getting their stories on the pages. More teaching on getting the
plan from planning stage to story is needed. This needs to be the focus of the next few D5 lessons
(adding events tomorrow) and writing next week.
Did a couple of running records which helped me understand exactly what is needed in a running
record and how to record them. Tested the highest students which was good practice. Also did some
sight words tests on other students which, again, gave me good practice on classroom testing.
