Guided reading with Stingrays - focus on inferring

Monday
01.09.2014

Have students look at the front of the cover. This story is about an old school, how can we tell?
Where is this school? Who goes to this school?
Read book through - allow students to read a page aloud if they want to. Have other students
remind them of reading strategies if they get stuck on words. Have other students assist with
working out words.
Grandma said school was different, did she like the differences or not? How can we tell? What
evidence is there?
Are there any differences we can see in the pictures that are not in the text?
Students break in to pairs (ensure like readers are paired) and read to each other. Give students a
checklist reminder of the reading strategies

Guided Reading - read with Sharks

Tuesday
02.09.2014

Read book to the students and have them follow along with their fingers. Ensure all books are flat
on the floor so students can see my finger and I can see that they are following along.
Have students find the word 'said' and 'sad' on the first page. What is the difference between
these two words? Are there any other words on the page that start the same? End the same?
Ask students what it means when words are in the speech bubbles. Have students read these
words.
Focus on the words that are sound words (eg 'chirp') - What are these words? Why are they used?
Read through the story again and have students read along with words that they know.
Ask students to retell the story at the end.
